RAIN 8/10: Researcher says half of U.S. mobile device owners will use wireless Internet by 2013
EMARKETER PREDICTS 130 MILLION U.S. MOBILE INTERNET USERS BY THENEmarketer has announced it has revised earlier projections and now says half of the U.S. mobile user population will access the Internet on their devices by 2013, and nearly 54% will do so the following year — over 44% of the U.S. population.
An article on Emarketer’s website cites a new Nielsen study that shows fully 25% of mobile phone owners in the U.S. now have smartphones. Nielsen predicts that by the end of next year in this country, there will be more smartphones in the field than “non-smartphones,” (aka “feature phones”).

LEADING PUREPLAY WEBCASTER DIGITALLY IMPORTED UNVEILS IPHONE APPInternet-only webcaster Digitally Imported, which specializes in electronic music, on Friday released its official app for the Apple iPhone (in the App Store here). The free app, as of press time, has garnered an average four-and-a-half star rating (out of five, and from a total of 58 users ratings). One reviewer said the app works “phenomenally well,” and cited the programs ability to cache and reconnect when the signal is temporarily lost. Look for our take on the app in an upcoming issue of RAIN.
Yesterday RAIN reported that Digitally Imported was one of three Internet-only webcasters debuting in Ando Media’s “Domestic” Top 20 rankings for June. (All three had previously appeared in the “All Streams” rankings. Ando Media is now capable of breaking out U.S.-based listening for Internet-only webcasters who stream in the Shoutcast (aka streaming MP3) format.). Digitally Imported ranked 8th for U.S. listening in the M-Su 6a-12m daypart. More in RAIN here.
