RAIN 8/25: Pandora spotlights improved "genre-based" listening options

Posted on: 08/25/2010

OPTION MAKES PANDORA MORE USABLE TO THOSE SEEKING A MORERADIO-STYLEEXPERIENCE

Pandora has expanded and improved its range of genre-based channels, adding more selections, allowing personalization and making the streams much more visible for users.

There are over 20 genres to choose from and more than 100 “micro-genre” stations. Each is personalizable and can be easily found through a link on Pandora homepage and new browser window (pictured). You can find the browser here.

These selections may expose Pandora to a new range of listeners — users who know what kind of music they want to hear, but don’t know (or even care to know) specific artists. For example, I may want to play some lounge or classical music for a fancy shindig, but don’t really know any good artists or songs from either genre. Now I can just use Pandora’s “20th Century” Classical music station.

In other words, Pandora seems to be targeting radio lovers with this new feature.

In fact, the new emphasis on these genre channels was brought about in reaction to user feedback. “Our listeners have been telling us for a while that they’d like an easy way to start a station from popular genres with the option to personalize the station from there,” said Senior Music Curator Michael Zapruder.

Though these channels may be new to many users, Pandora has actually had a limited number of genre-based selections for a while. They weren’t personalizable, however, and were a bit tricky to find. Find out more from Pandora’s press release here.

SNAPSHOT OF NET RADIO IN GERMANY: “COMPLEMENTARY” TO FM, PLENTY OF APPS

New data from Germany’s BLM and Goldmedia shows that the number of German Internet radio stations is on the rise, 44% of which are available on mobile phones. Additionally, 70% of all German FM stations have their own mobile apps.

Finally, the companies found that people listen to broadcast radio in the morning and Internet radio at night, suggesting “that online radio complements traditional FM radio.” You can find out more from BLM and Goldmedia’s press release here.

TECHCRUNCH: ELEVATION PARTNERS LOOKING TO INVEST IN PANDORA, UP TO $100mm?

TechCrunch reported yesterday that Elevation Partners has signed a letter of intent to purchase a “large chunk of shares” in Pandora — possibly worth up to $100 million. That’s according to “sources close to Elevation” and Pandora’s Deborah Roth, who told TechCrunch that “we’re aware that Elevation has been interested in buying Pandora shares.” TechCrunch has more coverage here.
