RAIN SUMMIT EAST IN D.C. TO HOST AWARDS CEREMONY

The coming RAIN Summit East (now less than 2 weeks away!) will not only feature a line-up of informative speakers and enlightening panels, but will also host the presentation of the first-ever RAIN Internet Radio Awards! The Awards are an exciting opportunity to honor the achievements and the best practices of the Internet radio industry. Today we’re delighted to announce the award finalists and the judges who will pick the winners.

The finalists in the category of “Best Overall Online Radio Service” include: Pandora, Radio Paradise, Radio.com (CBS Intereactive’s new streaming platform), CienRadios.com.ar from Argentina and Live365.

Within the category of “Best Streaming Broadcast Station” are Boston’s WEEI, RadioWoodstock WDST, FOX News Radio, 1500 ESPN Twin Cities and Edmonton’s Hot 107. This award will go to the single broadcast station that has executed the best streaming strategy.

The third category, “Best Overall Digital Strategy,” will honor the broadcast station, broadcast group, or online-only webcaster that has implemented the finest overall digital strategy — including not only the stream but mobile efforts, websites, video and on-demand content. Finalists include CBS Radio, ESPN Radio, Germany’s Laut.fm, Wolfgang’s Vault Radio and Jelli’s Crowdsourcing Service.

Finally, we’ve introduced a fourth category within the RAIN Awards to honor the great webcasters that didn’t quite fit any of the 3 above categories. Finalists in this category include Classic 1260 KYA, HardRadio, LuxuriaMusic.com, Beatles-A-Rama and HealthRadio.net.

To pick winners within each category for the Awards, RAIN has hand-selected a panel of Internet radio’s leading industry experts:

  • Steve Dahl, (pictured top-left) legendary broadcaster and now pioneer podcaster
  • Joe Gallagher, Managing Director at Angel Street Capital, LLC and President/CEO at Aritaur Communications, Inc.
  • Tom Webster, (pictured middle-left) Vice President of Strategy, Edison Research.
  • Jeff Vidler, Senior Vice President of Vision Critical.
  • Robin Flynn, Senior Consultant with SNL Kagan.
  • Bennett Zier, CEO at The Zier Group, LLC and Managing Partner at Umansky Wyatt Zier, Consulting, LLC
  • Natalie Swed Stone, OMD US Director, National Radio Investment
  • Bob Maccini, director of the Media Services Group
  • Sarah McBride, journalist, most recently with the Wall Street Journal and an industry expert.
  • Jennifer Lane, (pictured bottom-left) publisher of Audio4Cast and former Katz Net Radio Sales president.
  • The Awards will be presented at RAIN Summit East, an official co-located event of the RAB/NAB Radio Show. It takes place Tuesday, September 28 in Washington D.C. The Summit will feature a long list of radio experts, from Bonneville president/CEO Bruce Reese to AccuRadio COO John Gehron. More details, and information on how to register, can be found here. We hope to see you there!

SURVEY SHOWS GROWING INTEREST IN IN-CAR NET RADIO

A new survey from Mark Ramsey and VIP Research investigated interest in dashboard Internet radio among current radio listeners. They found that 34% of respondents said they would listen to less local radio if they had an Internet radio receiver in their dashboard and that 61% would listen to an in-dash Net radio over an AM/FM receiver in a mobile device. Ramsey also points out that a full 50% of Alternative music fans said they would listen to less local radio if they had in-dash Net radio.

“This notion of Internet Radio is cannibalizing a third of [broadcaster’s] audience sight unseen and sound unheard. Just imagine what will happen once trial occurs (ask somebody who has sampled Pandora or Slacker about that),” writes Ramsey (here).

    1. What an amazing honor for our little Classic KYA! I’m in awe of the other great stations in our category — and, truly, it’s an honor simply to be nominated alongside four great digital stations.

      Thank you very much!
