RAIN 11/23: NAB, iBiquity offer sneak peek of plans for personalizable HD radio ·Nov 23, 11:30 AM TECHNOLOGY COULD DELIVER CUSTOM CONTENT BASED ON LOCATION, AGE, OTHER INFOThe NAB FASTROAD technology initiative and iBiquity have published a report about “Persona Radio,” an advanced HD radio concept that would allow greater customization of programming, advertising and more. The document, which runs through the technical possibilities of the system, states that “every aspect of the service and its timing may be personalized.”
Specifically, the system can customize audio content, text (related to the audio content or otherwise), advertisements and other content can be customized for listeners. That personalization depends on the user’s profile (age, gender, etc.) and “current state” (location or stated activity, like “couch potato”). You can find the NAB’s press release here and the document on Persona Radio here (PDF). This concept is exciting. Recent studies, like that from Bridge Ratings (RAIN coverage here) show that listeners are starting to expect personalization features. Meanwhile, Sirius XM’s Mel Karmazin recently hinted at coming customization features, as did Clear Channel’s Robert Pittman (possibly referring to iHeartRadio; RAIN coverage here and here). “This is without doubt one of our all time favourite iPad apps. The UI is absolutely sumptuous with perfectly executed transitions and animations, which give the app a real veneer of absolute quality.” You can find the full review here.
