RAIN 12/1: Most webcasters up in September 2010 Webcast Metrics ·Dec 1, 11:13 AM PANDORA GROWS; SLACKER SLOWS; CUMULUS AND ESPN SHOW BIGGEST PERCENTAGE INCREASESAndo Media yesterday released their Webcast Metrics rankings for September 2010, just one week after Ando released August’s numbers (RAIN coverage here).
According to Ando’s domestic numbers for September, Pandora still holds the top spot, while most of the terrestrial broadcasters continued the audience growth they began in August after summertime declines. Pandora’s AAS (Average Active Sessions, which is essentially equivalent to AQH — i.e., average simultaneous listeners) grew 2.5% from August to September (Mon-Sun 6a-12m), reaching 407,394. That’s over 60% higher than all of the top 5 terrestrial groups’ streaming audiences combined. Other webcasters that saw significant growth in that daypart included Cumulus (up 46% to 12,673), ESPN Radio (up 24% to 16,770), EMF (up 11% to 12,408), Citadel (up 10.5% to 29, 295), CBS Interactive Music Group (up 9% to 110,259), and Emmis (up 8% to 5,724), and AccuRadio (up 7.5% to 4,870). Though Pandora’s growth rate was lower than last month (causing at least one trade publication to question whether its growth is slowing overall), it should be noted that Pandora’s audience has grown 176% year-over-year, compared to the top five broadcasters’ streams being down 7% for the same period. As you can see from the accompanying RAIN chart, Pandora has actually had several slow-growth months in the past year, but they’ve almost always been preceeded by and followed by an extremely high-growth month. Pandora also had the largest gain of all webcasters in terms of persons, with an AQH increase of 10,021 listeners. Slacker’s AAS in September was 13,905, actually a slight decline from 13,944 in August. You can find both the domestic Mon-Sun 6a-12m and all streams Mon-Sun 6a-12m rankings below. COLEMAN STUDY PRESENTED AT RAIN SUMMIT EAST NOW AVAILABLE ONLINEMedia research firm Coleman Insights is now making available its “Successful Audio Streaming Strategies” study, which it first presented at the RAIN Summit East conference in Washington, D.C. in September.
Coleman found, in its research, streaming audio consumers largely have “low awareness levels and relatively shallow perceptions… of the options available to them.” The study compares how consumers use and perceive Internet-only streaming services (like Pandora) with terrestrial AM/FM simulcast streams. Coleman Insights VP Sam Milkman delivered the debut presentation of the study September 28th at the RAIN event. PANDORA SAYS ITS USERS LOVING HOLIDAY MUSICPandora shared an interesting stat with the media this week. This year marks the first holiday season the service has offered a “holiday genre” selection, and it’s apparently being received with massive success. Pandora spokesperson Deborah Roth told us that currently one in every ten stations being created by users is based on a holiday music format.
