RAIN 5/2: RIAA says web/satellite radio earned more for copyright owners in 2010 than on-demand ·May 2, 10:31 AM DIGITAL PERFORMANCE ROYALTIES “GROWING AMAZINGLY”New data from the RIAA reportedly shows that, for the first time, Internet and satellite radio companies brought in more revenue for copyright holders than subscription music services — like MOG or Rhapsody — in 2010.
“The subscription services have been relatively flat for the five or six years we’ve been tracking them,” said Joshua Friedlander, the RIAA’s vice president of research and strategic analysis. “Digital performance royalties, on the other hand, which reflect services like Pandora, have been growing amazingly.” The Associated Press reports that performance royalty payments from Internet and satellite radio have grown 60% from 2009 to 2010, increasing from $155.5 million to $249.2 million. FILMMAKER KEVIN SMITH TO LAUNCH NET RADIO, PARTNERS WITH STITCHER FOR MOBILE Kevin Smith, whose film projects include Clerks, Dogma, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out, and Red State, will launch the SModcast Internet Radio (S.I.R.). The webcast will be borne out of content from SModcast.com, the suite of podcast features Smith and cohort Scott Mosier started on New Year’s Day 2010.
And Stitcher has announced that its Stitcher SmartRadio app, which delivers on-demand personalized audio programming to mobile devices and iPads, has been named the official mobile partner for the station.
