MUSIC DISCOVERY SERVICE HITLANTIS RAISES $1.5m, USER BASE UP 40% Music discovery service Hitlantis recently announced it had closed an “over-subscribed angel investment” of $1.5 million. A Series “A” round of $4-7 million is planned for fall.
The service, run by Finnish startup Cognitive Maps, has seen its user base grow by 40% in recent weeks. We wrote about its iPhone app in June (here) and an Android app is due out by the end of summer. Hitlantis is a music streaming and discovery service with dynamic visuals. Recommended artists are displayed as bubbles on a giant “map” which users can navigate through, much like exploring Google Maps. You can find Hitlantis here. LIKE TV, MOBILE’S “PRIME TIME” IN THE EARLY EVENING HOURSNew research has found that mobile media’s “prime time” — the time of day when mobile web and phone apps see their peak usage — is between 7 and 9pm, similar to that of television. It’s interesting to note a Nielsen and Yahoo study from winter that indicates 86% of U.S. mobile Internet users watch TV with their mobile devices.
Though the usage peak ends after 9, usage does remain up into later hours. Mobile ad click-through rates also peak between 7pm and midnight. Though the study was conducted by third-party ad server MediaMind, mobile ad network Jumptap and Google both say their data shows much the same peak usage. So, should webcasters be expecting increased mobile listening after Internet radio’s traditional 9am-5pm workday peak? Or is smartphone and tablet use more naturally “something to do while watching television”? (We’re assuming here that most of these mobile users aren’t actually watching TV on their devices, though some certainly could be.) Read more in AdAge online here.
