RAIN 8/24: RAIN announces speakers for programming, legal panels at RAIN Summit Chicago ·Aug 24, 11:38 AM PREMIERE, ASTRAL DIGITAL CHIEFS; LIVE 365 COUNSEL JOIN US AS PANELISTS FOR 9/13 EVENT We’re just three weeks away from RAIN Summit Chicago, this year’s early-fall edition of the Internet radio industry’s premiere conference.
It’s not too late to register. True, we’re near the sell-out point, but there are still indeed a limited number of passes available. You can register to attend right now using your credit card or PayPal account via the RAIN Summit Eventbrite page here.
Live365 General Counsel Angus MacDonald (lower-left) will join us too, as part of the “Talk to My Lawyer” panel. It’ll be an excellent “brush-up” on legal issues related to streaming, privacy and ad serving, and royalties. RAIN Summit Chicago 2011 is sponsored (in part) by Triton Digital, knowDigital, dot.fm, and Abacast. COURT FINDS DMCA PROTECTS MP3TUNES, RULES AGAINST EMIA New York district court ruling this week apparently clarifies that digital music locker services do not need licenses from record labels to allow users to store and access the music they own. Judge William H. Pauley III found against major record company EMI when he ruled that online locker service MP3Tunes was protected by the “safe harbor” provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and is not responsible should its users engage in the transfer of unauthorized copies of music (of which the service is unaware).
Live 365 counsel Angus MacDonald (who’ll speak at RAIN Summit Chicago on 9/13, see today’s top story) writes, “The decision represents a significant victory for other cloud-based music services – such as Google, Amazon and Dropbox – who should have renewed confidence in operating their cloud services without a license.” Read his analysis in Audio4Cast here. RAIN INTERNET RADIO AWARDS FINALISTS: BEST SINGLE-STREAM WEBCASTEROn September 13th we’ll host our first “hometown” gathering, RAIN Summit Chicago (for which there are a limited number of passes still available, info here).
As we did last year, we’ll conclude the event with the presentation of the RAIN Internet Radio Awards. This week, we’re announcing the finalists in each category (see coverage from Monday and yesterday). The award for the Best Single-Stream Webcaster will go to the best “pureplay” webcaster (i.e. non-broadcaster) with a single stream of radio content (such as HardRadio.com, last year’s winner in this category). The 2011 finalists for this category are: We invite RAIN readers to visit these sites, as they’re among the finest single-stream webcasters in the industry. Tomorrow in RAIN, we’ll announce the finalists for the Best Overall Online Radio Service award. BRS MEDIA MAKES INC.
