iPHONE APP SHOWS WHAT RADIO STATIONS ARE PLAYING RIGHT NOWWhat’s On Air is an iPhone app that shows — as its name implies — what’s currently playing on radio stations across the world. The app not only lets users search for stations currently playing specific content, but saves the searches and alerts the user when a station starts playing matching tunes. As Billboard notes (here), the app could even be “helpful or amusing if you’re in the biz.” Find the app here. ANDROID-POWERED, NET RADIO-STREAMING CAR STEREO COMING IN OCTOBEROne of the most interesting Internet radio-capable car receivers at CES 2011 was the Android-powered Parrot Asteroid (RAIN coverage here. Now the device finally has a release date and price tag: October for $350.
The Asteroid sports a number of built-in apps, including TuneIn Radio, but can link up with Android smartphones and — surprisingly — iPhones via Bluetooth to stream any app of your choosing. Plus, Parrot has released an SDK for the Asteroid which should allow other developers to build specialized dashboard apps. CNet has more coverage here. INSIDE PANDORA’S COMEDY GENOME PROJECTPandora recently gave Fast Company an inside look at how the Net radio giant analyzes comedy. To build the Comedy Genome Project, Pandora’s staff of five in-house comedians score tracks based on a range of more than 100 characteristics including Delivery (“Angry/Hostile,” for example), Format (“Anecdote”) and Comic Hook (“Bait & Switch”).
Fast Company found that some “genes are scored along an axis that runs between two opposing traits,” such as “Deadpan” (Steven Wright) to “Animated” (Robin Williams). You can read Fast Company‘s full article here. Pandora branched into comedy in May, starting with 10,000 tracks by 700 comedians (RAIN coverage here). share: del.icio.us.
