RAIN 9/1: UK online radio aggregator Radioplayer campaigns b'dcasters to create "all radio" ratings ·Sep 1, 11:58 AM ALL-IN-ONE WEB RADIO PLATFORM EYEING WEB-CONNECTED TVs, LAUNCHES FACEBOOK APPThe UK’s all-in-one online radio platform Radioplayer is reportedly encouraging broadcasters to share listening data “in a bid to drive transparency of multi-platform listening via a common metric,” New Media Age reports. “This would benefit the industry and give advertisers more accountability,” said Radioplayer MD Michael Hill.
The service is also working with industry measurement body RAJAR on reaching a common metric. According to Hill, RAJAR “realizes it may need to adapt the model to accommodate new digital modes of listening — so this is all about exploring that.” The moves somewhat mimic Arbitron’s recent push to create an all-in-one measurement platform for over-the-air, Internet and mobile listening (RAIN coverage here and here). Radioplayer plans to release new listening figures in the next few days. Radioplayer reported earlier this summer that it had nearly 6 million visitors and 22.5 million listening sessions in May 2011 (RAIN coverage here). Hill also revealed Radioplayer plans to expand to web-connected TVs soon, hopefully reaching partnerships by this time next year. “We’re trying to grow interfaces for radio that could exist on five screens – computer, tablet, mobile, connected TVs, and actual radio one day.” Meanwhile, the radio platform also launched a Facebook application, allowing users to easily share stations and see what their friends are streaming. The company makes devices capable of wirelessly streaming Internet radio, local music and other sources around your home.
Note that as many Sonos users have devices in multiple rooms, this doesn’t quite mean the company has gadgets in one million homes. That said, “it’s a big milestone,” writes Evolver.fm‘s Eliot Van Buskirk. “And one that indicates that some people, at least, want their digital audio played over speakers.” Read more from Van Buskirk here. KNOWDIGITAL HOSTS WEBINAR ON IN-CAR NET RADIO LISTENINGYesterday knowDigital hosted a webinar about its study of in-car Internet radio usage, which found (among many stats) that 70% of “streamers” are already listening to Net radio in the car and would pay up to $200 for better dashboard streaming equipment.
KnowDigital president Sam Milkman presented these finds at RAIN Summit West (more coverage here). Milkman will join us at RAIN Summit Chicago to discuss a new study on social media.
