 Pandora will shut off UK streams ·Jan 8, 11:39 AM From PC Pro: “The online music recommendation service, Pandora, will stop operating in the UK after failing to secure a viable “The project was previously ordered to stop supplying the service outside the US in July of last year, but continued operating in the UK in the hope that a licensing deal could be struck. “However, this has proved to be impossible, and the service will now be closed to UK IP numbers from January 15th. “‘Both the PPL (which represents the record labels) and the MCPS/PRS Alliance (which represents music publishers) have demanded per track performance minima rates which are far too high to allow ad supported radio to operate and so, hugely disappointing and depressing to us as it is, we have to block the last territory outside of the US,’ says Tim Westergren, Pandora founder, in an email to customers… “The service’s future is far from certain even in the US, where it is ‘fighting for its “Westergren admits that unless these problems can be resolved there is a very real chance that the service will have to cease entirely.” Read PC Pro’s coverage here. share: del.icio.us. I suppose this what major record groups call ‘Progress’. Shutting down the very entities that were created to promote the music that major record companies are trying to sell. Why didn’t they do that with over-the-air radio stations? Why not do it now? How much of a music business would we have now with policies like that over the past 50 years? Sooner or later it will become clear that these policies are serious mistakes, and that until the P2P issues are dealt with these licensing fees will only hurt the record groups in the end.

I’ve been using Pandora for a few months in the UK. I discovered artists I had never head of before or had been only vaguely aware of. Surely that is GOOD for the music industry. The last two CDs I have bought were BOTH heard-on-internet radio/site purchases: from FIP France and UK-based SW Radio Africa. The major record groups are killing music if they price the Pandora and their ilk off the net.

i have made a related and quite useful post for anyone who still wants to use pandora outside the US. im not computer literate really and i would appreciate the support for my group. please join it (its on face book) and contribute advice and pass it around. i think its so wrong what the station has been forced to do. if the music industry hadnt spent all its time ripping of the public it may have found some loyalty in its consumers, the fact that theyre taking a hit is nothing to do with stations like pandora and once again theyre trying to unfairly control the markets. to all major record labels around the world, your time has come and its your fault. try giving something back to the people youve taken from for so long. here is the link to the group

Just a tip: I’ve discovered that I can get 80% of the music recommendation value offered by Pandora out of my subscription to Napster. Napster offers more than Pandora in other ways, though, in that it gives one a vast library of downloadable 192kbs files organized into playlists and transferrable to 3 computers and 3 mp3 players. Now they have announced DRM-free purchasable files available sometime in the next few months. I suspect they will figure out how to bridge the 20% gap with Pandorra. Even before they get there, I’m extremely pleased with this service. And quite frankly I’m surprised.
