Net radio portal banks on "portability"

From Wired: Wireless connectivity [was] one of the major themes at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show… and 2008 will most likely being WiMAX-capable devices that can receive internet radio in more locations.

In anticipation, Torian Wireless [has debuted] a heavily-redesigned version of its MiRoamer internet radio portal, which allows users to organize internet radio stations across multiple devices. Through a single interface, users will be able to search and browse worldwide online radio stations, adding them to favorites. If a station isn’t included in MiRoamer’s catalog, it can be added by pasting in the URL.

Users will be able to listen to the stations through the site, as opposed to surfing to each station, and subscribe to premium stations through the site too. (If the royalty rates for webcasters stay where they are, you can bet lots of stations will offer a paid, ad-free option).

MiRoamer could be useful as an organizational tool for listening to webcasts at a computer, but things will get more interesting if the company manages to sign up some high profile partners. By adding a “token” number from your device to your profile on the site, you’ll be able to access all of the stations on your portables, in your car, and wherever else the internet eventually becomes available. Organize once, listen from anything.
