NYT BLOG SUGGESTSSLOW AND STEADYCBS READY TO RACE ONLINE A New York Times tech blogger (Saul Hansell) calls the recent CBS/AOL streaming agreement “an interesting swing of the pendulum,” in that until recently, it would have been more likely that CBS would be bringing no more than content to a deal like this; and it would be AOL that supplied the technology and online marketing and sales. For the column, David Goodman, president digital media and integrated marketing for CBS Radio, made the point that his company has realized the Internet can be a tool for radio, not just a competing medium. “Now, finally, big media companies like CBS realize that their futures — and certainly their stock prices — depend on the Internet, and they are investing in the technology and people they need,” writes Hansell. Goodman commented, “It goes back to the tortoise and the hare. We might have been a little slow getting into this space and we are now totally committed to being the leading player.”

HANSON AT CONVERGENCE TODAY Today is Day 2 of Radio Ink’s “Convergence” conference in San Jose. On the docket today, RAIN‘s Kurt Hanson will give a 15-minute presentation on “The Future of Radio” and moderate a panel on emerging radio technologies. RAMSEY ON XM/SIRIUS PAID STREAMS: WHY?! Mark Ramsey writes in his Hear 2.0 blog, “You would think somebody in satellite radio would consider the possibility that the Internet is more than a launching pad for a subscription service. That perhaps – just maybe – there’s money to be made from the satellite radio brands that isn’t sourced from the pockets of consumers with abundant free options and iPods that work just fine.” He says the satellite operators business model of selling hardware and subscriptions is “easily their biggest mistake.” Read Ramsey’s blog here.

BBC LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE SITE The BBC relaunched its improved mobile Internet site yesterday to keep pace with improvements to consumers’ phones and connection speeds. Added to the new website is a section for BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, with entertainment headlines and images. The BBC attracts more than 2.7 million unique mobile users a month, “making it the most popular mobile site outside the phone companies’ own portals,” writes The Guardian.

GADGET OF THE DAY: INKEL IDS-1500 WIFI PHONE DOCKING STATION Alright, it’s a speaker dock for your iPod, but it also docks a Wi-Fi-based phone. The result is that you also get a WiFi Internet radio. Oh, it’s also an alarm clock. It’s just now begin shown in Europe, so there’s no word on if/when it’ll make it to the U.S. market.
