TRIBUNE BETS ON RADIO BRAINS TO REINVIGORATE COMPANY: Tribune Chief Innovation Officer and broadcast and satellite vet Lee Abrahms told the Wall Street Journal that experience in radio is helpful for media facing new competition. Radio “was written off as dead” as TV became more popular in the 1940s and ’50s but “it reinvented itself then and it continues to reinvent itself and prosper… a lot of the principles apply to television, Internet, newspapers, really any medium.” The Tribune company has hired half a dozen radio executives since Sam Zell took control of the company late last year, including Randy Michaels, a former radio chief for Clear Channel Communications. Several other Clear Channel execs have been hired in recent days. The Wall Street Journal story is here.

CLEAR CHANNEL HITSMILESTONE” IN HD iTUNES TAGGING: Clear Channel Radio today announced that more than 340 of its primary HD stations are now capable of transferring a song heard on the radio to an Apple iPod. Calling it “a milestone in the implementation of the HD Radio iTunes tagging,” Clear Channel is heralding the development as signifying its “HD industry leadership and commitment to a broad range of media platforms.” Clear Channel currently offers over 440 HD stations and more than 340 HD2 stations. The first tagging-capable receivers hit stores shelves today. Polk Audio’s i-Sonic Entertainment System 2 is available now at 170 Apple Store locations, Apple’s online store and on the Polk Audio site. In June, the unit will also be available at select Best Buy stores.

LABELS PLACE HIGH DEMANDS ON DIGITAL MUSIC COMPANIES LOOKING TO LICENSE: Sure, record labels are finally appear to be earnestly dipping a toe into a new age in music delivery, given recent developments like the MySpace Music arrangement. But “A stark truth facing any aspiring digital music service these days is that working with record labels is going to carry a hefty price,” according to a Reuters Billboard article (here). In forging these deals with the likes of MySpace, Imeem, etc., labels are asking for much higher licensing “upfront” payments, and in some cases, equity stakes in their digital partners. According to the article, “a mobile messaging company recently walked away from negotiations in which a label demanded 85% of the company’s gross revenue, even though the deal didn’t involve any music licensing.”

RAB CREATES POSITION, NAMES NEW VP/INTERACTIVE REVENUE DEVELOPMENT: The Radio Advertising Bureau has named John Potter, formerly VP/Educational Services, to the new position of VP/Interactive Revenue Development. The RAB says the position was “created to address the immediate needs of radio sellers in today’s media landscape” and “is part of RAB’s commitment to continually provide radio stations with new tools to improve their marketing expertise and selling skills – including those necessary to compete effectively in the new digital arena.” Potter will focus on training resources for assisting radio stations with their interactive content and sales efforts. (Potter is not to be confused with Jonathan Potter, executive director of the Digital Media Association.)
