BBC WORLD SERVICE, ACCURADIO WINBEST RADIOWEBBYS: The Webby Awards Academy announced the winners for its 12th annual honors today, and chose the BBC World Service as “Best Radio Site of the Year.” AccuRadio’s AccuTunes Net radio interface captured “The Webby People’s Voice Award” as determined by the votes of Webby site visitors. Other radio nominees included CBC’s Radio 3 channel, Seattle public broadcaster KEXP, and Virgin Radio International. An awards ceremony will be held in New York on June 10.

STEPHEN COLBERT AWARDED WEBBYPERSON OF THE YEAR: Satirical pundit and host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” Stephen Colbert has won the “Person of the Year” Webby “in recognition of his pioneering role in utilizing the Internet as a significant tool for interaction with fans” of his show. Colbert regularly prompts his young demo (and presumably Internet savvy) audience to participate in the show (he’s offered video for fans to edit, featuring the best on the air) and promote his celebrity through online pranks (changing Wikipedia entries, and winning an online vote to get a bridge in Budapest named after him). Musical artist will.i.am will also be honored for “Webby Artist of the Year” in recognition of his contribution to the political landscape with his making of the Obama videos.

AT-WORK LISTENERS BOOTING UP, TUNING IN: Arbitron and Edison Media say the number of on-the-job radio listeners using their computers (instead of an AM/FM radio) to listen to radio is growing quickly — to 20% this year from 12% just one year ago. And while the report gave no indication of programming preference, Edison president Larry Rosin points out to broadcasters that “on the Internet, the competition is not just the other stations in town… the possibilities are essentially infinite.” The researchers also point out that college grads were far more likely to listen to radio online while at work (30% do) than non-college grads (12%), undoubtedly since college grads are more likely to work with computers and in acceptable listening environments. BUSINESS WEEK BLOG CALLS CBS’s PLAY.IT “ITS OWN PANDORA: The blog entry makes a point of the fact that the new CBS online radio initiative (presented in Los Angeles yesterday and covered in RAIN here, as well as in Kurt’s blog on the homepage) is not based on the Last.fm technology. CBS bought Last.fm last year for $280 million. BW also has lots of screenshots of the Play.it prototype (like the “drag and drop bullseye” pictured below). CBS says the service will roll out over the next few months. See Business Week here.

INTERNET RADIO DEVICE OF THE DAY: OLINDA: Here’s the catch — it’s for AM/FM listening, but uses its Internet connectivity for other features. The device (a prototype, not a ready-for-market product) uses a Wi-Fi connection to monitor when your friends are online, and if they’re listening to the same radio station. The unit is expandable with physical “plug-ins” (the “Klippit” module has a button you press when you find a radio program you like, it gets added as a favorite on your Facebook profile; the “Volume Voting” module allows you to rate songs by how much you turn up the sound). Here’s more in Gizmodo.
