BORRELL SEES POTENTIAL FOR LOCAL MEDIA ONLINE, BUT DOES RADIO LACK ‘MOTIVATION’?: Borrell Associates expects big things for local media web site ad sales in the coming year, and that includes local radio. But the analyst says radio may not have the direct competitive pressure to to meet its potential for local online ad sales that drives newspapers and phone directories. Borrell expects local media site sales to rise overall this year 50% to $13.1 billion, and radio site revenues to grow 19% to $225 million, from $189 million in 2007. Interestingly, coverage of Borrell’s findings in PaidContent.org (via the Washington Post here), says local radio may not be sufficiently “motivated” to realize its online potential. “Since radio’s traditional ad base is not being lured away by a specific internet application the way online classifieds have hurt newspapers or search engines are attacking Yellow Pages, the industry is not as motivated as those others to ramp up and differentiate their online properties.” The analyst does like the recent trend of radio and TV “developing (online) identities independent of their traditional media versions,” and that by”loosening their ties to old media, local web outlets have been able to realize higher gains.”

DEL COLLIANO: GENERATION Y AND TERRESTRIAL RADIO DO NOT MIX: Noted radio expert Jerry Del Colliano will be giving a presentation at this summer’s Conclave in Minneapolis to broadcasters who realize radio needs big changes to survive the future. In a blog post previewing his ideas, Del Colliano presents a plan for the future of radio which falls back onto the assumption that Generation Y has already decided it does not like terrestrial radio. Broadcasters should instead focus their on-air programming to its available audience: Baby Boomers and those who grew up with radio. To attract and capture Generation Y and younger, Del Colliano believes radio needs to focus on next-generation delivery platforms: on-demand availability, podcast-length programming, mobile compatibility, and social network utilization. For more of Del Colliano’s points, read his full post here.
REPLACE YOUR CAR RADIO WITH A PC: The Atlas CPC-1000 from Azentek is much more than a replacement for your AM/FM car radio—its a built-in PC that just might be more powerful than your desktop. Featuring an Intel Duo chipset, Windows Vista OS, and a 120GB hard drive among a slew of other capabilities like DVD play-back and Bluetooth, the Atlas CPC-1000 has satellite and HD radio compatibility and hosts a Wi-Fi antenna for internet radio playback. Where exactly you’ll find a wi-fi network on your morning commute however is open to question.
SURVEY: MOMS TAKE TO THE INTERNET, ONLINE RADIO: A new survey by Mindshare has found that 14% of mothers who have at least one child under 18 use internet radio regularly. 97% use email regularly, 65% shop online, and 18% use social networking sites. Read the full Media Life Magazine article here
BOOTED DJS FIND NEW LIFE ONLINE: DJs Gary Smith and Chris Cantore can no longer be heard on terrestrial radio (Smith for his involvement in Don Imus’ outburst and Cantore due to cut-backs), but both have created their own internet radio stations and enjoy the expanded freedom and innovation of webcasting. Smith (top photo), whose program Gary in the Morning just passed its 100-show mark, revealed (here) that online interaction with fans far surpasses that of terrestrial, allowing him to give airtime to the public. Cantore taps into his unabated personal music interests on his show X1FM. With no FM-dial rules to follow, he said (here) that he can now “come into my own.”
