SWISS WEBCAST BROADCASTS LIVE CLUB PERFORMANCES: Loud and Play (or Loud ‘N’ Play), a Swiss-based Internet radio stream, focuses primarily on underground dance and electronica music. While only one, non-customizable stream is offered (both online and through media players like iTunes), the site features a well-organized daily schedule of when particular programs (which are centered around sub-genres of dance music) will air. Interestingly, the site boasts that Loud and Play broadcasts live DJ performances from clubs. Sure enough, a rebroadcasted live track aired while we were tuned in. Certain live performances and in-house performance sessions can be downloaded as well. The player itself is minimalist, with a heavy focus on social networking through the included chat interface and a forum. — MS
EDISON’S 6 WAYS BROADCASTERS CAN STAY AFLOAT IN OCEAN OF WIFI CONTENT: Edison Media Research points out that with the coming implementation of universal Wi-Fi in cars — the initial step of which was announced recently by Chrysler (RAIN coverage here) — stations will have to fight harder than ever to distinguish themselves from a plethora of content choices. Edison lists 6 ways broadcasters can do this, recommending that the industry assist in the development of WiMax players and assure that smaller local stations not fall by the wayside. Additionally, radio should achieve “one-stop-shopping” status for news, weather, and traffic amongst the growing set of applications offered in cars. With “scores” of Top-40 stations and Jack.FMs available online, Edison recommends that marketing directors optimize their station’s Internet presentation, so listeners can easily see the content differences between Jack.FM Chicago and Jack.FM L.A. Most importantly, all stations need to be ready for the switch online: “I’m not going to be happy if every one of [my favorite terrestrial, satellite, and online stations] isn’t readily accessible…the industry as a whole should be ashamed of itself it lets that happen.” Read more of Edison’s recommendations here.
APPLE APPLICATION MAKES iPHONE AN iTUNES REMOTE: Wired’s Listening Post blog reports that a pre-release iPhone application may be an add-on that turns iPhones and iPod Touches into remote controls for iTunes. The instruction file included with the pre-release application touts that you can “use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home.” Picture it: the computer in your office playing Internet radio wirelessly to your den speakers with an AirPort Express, and you can control it all with your iPhone. “With one free little add-on, Apple will strengthen its ecosystem, shoring up the connections between its hardware, software and music aspects.” Read the Listening Post’s coverage here.
TRIBUNE HIRES ANOTHER JACOR VET: Jana Gavin, Jacor’s former vice president/non-traditional revenue, has been appointed as senior director/business development for Tribune Interactive at the Tribune. She joins other former-Jacor executives working at the Tribune, such as President Marc Chase, Sean Compton, Steve Gable, and Randy Michaels. “Jacor people are known for being fierce competitors and playing to win, so teaming up with the great staff already at Tribune gives us a significant leg up on the rest of the market,” said Kim Johnson, Tribune Interactive’s senior vice president/local sales.
