RAIN 7/7: On-demand streamer SeeqPod offers "radio-like" programmed playlists

SEEQPOD LAUNCHES RADIO-LIKE SERVICE: SeeqPod, a search-based online music and video streamer, has launched PodLists: playlists pre-made by SeeqPod. The playlists, featured on SeeqPod’s homepage, center around genres (“Funk #2”) or themes, such as “Star Gazing,” which includes tracks such as Datarock’s “Nightlife to Uranus” and The Police’s “Walking on the Moon.” It may not be a live broadcast, but it is a programmed selection of music. SeeqPod is currently being sued by Warner Music Group over widespread copyright infringement. For more, read Digital Music News’ coverage here.

RAIN ANALYSIS: Seeqpod is operating in a gray area of the law. They’re pointing to (and stringing together) music files that may be up on the web without the permission of the copyright owner, but Seeqpod’s position is that because they’re not hosting the files themselves, they’re not the ones violating copyright. So they’re helping consumers listen to (probably-illegal) MP3 file postings and then trying to sell advertising during the process. — KH

BROADBAND ADOPTION UP SLIGHTLY, BUT SOME RESIST OVER PRICE: 55% of adult Americans have a broadband connection in their house, according to a new study by The Pew Internet and American Life Project. That figure is “little changed” from 47% last year. Meanwhile, the cost of broadband reportedly fell slightly, with users claiming monthly bills of $34.50 down from $36 in 2005. Only 10% use dial-up connections, with 62% of those users claiming they don’t want broadband and 35% saying they would switch if broadband prices would decrease. Additionally, broadband usage in households with annual incomes of $20,000 or less fell from 28% in 2007 to 25%. For a PDF of Pew’s full study, click here.

BUSKIRK SEES SATELLITE MERGER HURTING STERN: An approved merger of XM and Sirius could end up reducing Howard Stern’s salary, speculates Eliot Van Buskirk of Wired’s Listening Post blog. He points out that Stern’s current 5-year $500 million contract was born out of a bidding feud between the two satellite providers. Without competition over content, Buskirk speculates that Stern may have to accept a significant pay cut in 2010 when it comes time to renegotiate his contract. Read Buskirk’s full post here.

DEVICE OF THE DAY: OXX CLASSIC 600: The Oxx Classic 600 Internet Radio follows the design of other desktop streaming devices: a large single speaker, control knobs, a fairly small screen, and access to Internet radio through Reciva’s portal using an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection. With no way to add your own station URLs and no other eye-catching features, the $300 price tag seems a bit steep. Read APC’s review of the device here.
