WI-FI ON MASS TRANSIT MAY COME VIALEAKYCOAX: Webcasters may soon be able to reach listeners commuting on public transportation. PC World reports that public transportation systems around the country have or will soon implement Wi-Fi access—in particular San Fransisco’s BART (Bay Area Rapid Transportation) system, which would use the “leaky” coax already present in subway tunnels to broadcast hi-speed Internet. While perhaps too crowded to use a laptop, a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone is all you would need to get online. Transit systems in Utah, Massachusetts, Texas, and Florida have also included or are trying out Wi-Fi hi-speed Internet access. Read the full article in PC World here.

WIRED NAMES TOP 10 MUSIC SITESWEBCASTERS ABSENT: Wired’s Listening Post blog has compiled their list of Top 10 Hottest Music Sites — including big names like Imeem, Muxtape, and RCRDLBL — but none are Internet radio sites. While honorable mentions go out to Last.fm, Slacker, and Pandora, only the very latter is an Internet radio broadcaster in the strictest sense. This list should leave webcasters and broadcasters thinking about why they didn’t make it. Is the royalty imbroglio preventing Internet radio from growing as it should? Or is it simply because, being based on the “old” medium of radio, webcasting doesn’t seem so revolutionary in a world of torrents, scrobbling, and MP3 aggregation? For the full Top 10 list, click here.

HYUNDAI TO OFFER HD RADIO: USA Today reports (here) that Hyundai will offer HD radio in the $4,000 electronics options package this month in its new Genesis sedan automobile. Digital radio is also available for $250 in BMWs, in three Mercedes-Benz models, and will be available in most Volvo models in 2009. HD radio promoters hope this inclusion will increase digital radio’s popularity, and executive VP of the HD Radio Alliance Diane Warren predicts “the rest of the [automotive] industry will follow” Hyundai and others’ example. Additionally, USA Today has listed some of the top HD channels in each genre here.

TORIAN WIRELESS PARTNERS WITH RADIOTIME: Torian Wireless, the Australian creator of Internet radio platform iRoamer, has partnered with aggregation developer RadioTime. Torian’s iRoamer, which compiles thousands of Internet radio stations for access on third-party devices, will use RadioTime’s technology to incorporate the digital streams of over 100,000 local and syndicated AM/FM radio stations. 1. I used wi-fi on a train in Boston recently and IT WORKS! After visiting some clients, I spent an hour on the Worcester commuter line where they are testing this. It was easy to access, free and worked almost continuously the entire trip. It dropped out a few times, but nothing that I’d consider annoying. Think of all the cities this could benefit. Instead of “snack bar” cars on Metro North, maybe they should have “work/wi-fi/quiet” cars!
