PANDORA iPHONE POPULARITY MAY HAVEBROKEN THE DAMFOR WEB RADIO: Pandora is currently the 4th most popular application for the new Apple iPhone, reports The Washington Post (here). The music service experienced an all-time high of usage over the weekend, streaming 3.3 million tracks just to iPhone users. New listeners reportedly tune in every 2 seconds and listen for an average of one hour per day. The San Fransisco Chronicle reports (here) that over 200,000 stations have been created on the iPhone. “I really think this has broken the dam for Internet radio, and we’re now going to start seeing people think about it differently – not as something you just get on your computer, but as a 360-degree solution – in the car, in the home, on the go,” said Pandora founder Tim Westergren, also expressing hope that the iPhone application’s popularity will help revamp the CRB royalty rates, which to Pandora are a “life-threatening expenses.”

ALL-DISNEY WEBCAST TO LAUNCH THROUGH NAPSTER: Napster has announced a partnership with Walt Disney Records to create a “Best of Disney” commercial-free online radio station. Programming will range from current hits from Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers to soundtracks from Disney’s animated films. Additionally, users can buy Disney music from Napster’s mp3 store. TRITON PARTNERS WITH NOWMEDIA: Triton Digital has partnered with NowMedia in order to provide the latter company’s Radio 3.0 product to terrestrial broadcasters. Radio 3.0 is a platform for radio stations’ websites, which includes live video streams and allows listeners to interact with broadcasting personalities and each other through a chat interface. A focus on social networking sites is also included through widgets. “We believe that local radio stations that engage their audiences with new, interactive capabilities will have a significant edge in competing for ad revenue over those that don’t. We are pleased that NowMedia has invested in a solution that makes it easy for radio stations to adapt,” said Triton Co-founder and COO Mike Agovino.

RADIO TOPS MEANS OF MUSIC DISCOVERY: A new survey of online music users by JupiterResearch reveals that 63% of 2,134 respondents claimed terrestrial radio was their top method of discovering new music, making radio the “most powerful means of music discovery.” Internet radio ranked in at 9%. Even among the 8% self-described music trendsetters, broadcast radio ranked at 59%, second only to word-of-mouth recommendations. “Radio remains the most powerful means of music discovery. However, word of mouth plays a much more important role for music fans who use music digitally than it does for overall online consumers…Digital music marketers and programmers should zero in on music influencers,” states the report.
