iPHONE’S APP SUCCESS MAY SPUR OTHER CARRIERS TO OPEN NETWORKS: 25 million applications were reportedly downloaded to iPhone and iPod Touch devices within 10 days of Apple’s App Store debut (of which Internet radio applications, such as Pandora and AOL Radio, were some of the most popular; RAIN coverage here). This success, coupled with the growing popularity of smart phones, may pressure other mobile carriers to open their networks to 3rd party applications. Carriers stand to profit from such a development, as many applications require users to sign up for high-priced data plans. As a result, investment in mobile applications has reportedly risen 90% to $383 million in the first half of 2008. With mobile carriers like Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T moving toward openness, along with the coming debut of Google’s Android mobile platform, could we soon see wide-spread distribution of Internet radio through iPhone-like mobile applications? ANDO MEDIA, AIRKAST LAUNCH MOBILE MEDIA PLATFORM TUNEKAST: Ando Media and AirKast have partnered to launch TuneKast, a web-based media platform that streams audio and video to mobile phones, as well as graphical advertisements. These ads will target listeners based on their location and will be tracked by Ando Media Webcast Metrics. TuneKast is designed to work on low-end mobile phones as well as smart phones like the iPhone. “This is the only solution on the market today that presents broadcasters with additional revenue opportunities in the emerging world of visual mobile advertising; without investing in additional costly applications. Our goal is to make it easy and efficient for our clients to extend their radio lifestyle to a listener’s mobile device,” said Paul Krasinski, Ando Media Executive VP. LIGGINS MENTIONS INTERACTIVE AMONG Q2 GAINS; RADIO ONE TO LAUNCH 3 NEW SITES: Though Radio One’s 2nd quarter income dropped 44% from last year, the company’s Internet earned revenues reportedly helped push Radio One’s overall revenue growth for the quarter up 1%. Radio One’s Internet business has generated more than $3.7 million in revenue since April 2008. While Radio One’s president and CEO Alfred Liggins remained cautious, he stated, “I am excited about our Internet growth opportunities, and I am confident our management team will continue to outperform the market.” For more, read R&R’s coverage here. Additionally, Radio One announced today the launch of three new web offerings: NewsOne, TheUrbanDaily and HelloBeautiful. These sites will join social networking site BlackPlanet, “making it the largest online media entity for African-Americans reaching more than 6 million unique visitors monthly.” For more, read Radio One’s press release here.

EMMIS PRODUCTS OFFERED TO ALL BROADCASTERS: Emmis Interactive announced today that they will be selling their line of website-enhancing products to all broadcasters. Emmis’ products include games — such as the Confidence Pool weekly pick-‘em Football pool — tools, and other applications like the iTunes Music Storefront. Deborah Esayian, co-president of Emmis Interactive said, “Radio stations, magazines and television stations now have the opportunity to use our customized online tools, whether or not they are served by our proprietary BaseStation platform…These products provide real revenue opportunities for media entities of any size or market.”
