CLEAR CHANNEL BETA SERVICE “I HEART RADIO” TO CHALLENGE CBS FOR ONLINE DOMINANCE: Clear Channel plans to challenge CBS’ claim as the #1 online radio player with its I Heart Music Internet platform, now in beta. The online player will stream 758 of Clear Channel’s stations, complete with song info and the ability to share stations through email. Additionally, Clear Channel partnered with Katz Media Group back in July to create the Katz Online Network, which brings together more than 1,200 stations and affiliates (RAIN coverage here). Comparatively, CBS Radio and AOL Radio combined offer over 400 channels online. President of CBS digital media and marketing David Goodman stated that such offerings from CBS Radio and Clear Channel will not be overcome by newcomers like Pandora: “Programs like Pandora are just playlists. A real radio program is the stuff between the music.” For more, read Ben Fong-Torres’ article in The San Fransisco Chronicle here.

CBS RADIO REORGANIZES MANAGEMENT TO FOCUS ON DIGITAL MEDIA: CBS Radio, focusing on developing digital media, shuffled some of its executives on Monday. David Goodman, president of digital media and integrated marketing, will now work towards bringing traditional radio content to digital platforms. Goodman is responsible for CBS’ deal with AOL Radio. Michael Weiss, president of sales, will now oversee the Altitude Group which Goodman previously ran, while the Altitude Group VP Rich Lobel will be free to develop campaigns for AT&T, Dodge, and other clients. “The business is changing at record setting speed which means we must act equally quick in evolving our management structure,” wrote Dan Mason, president and CEO of CBS Radio. HARRISON PROMOTED AT CLEAR CHANNEL: Clear Channel’s top digital strategist Evan Harrison has been promoted to President of the Online Music & Radio unit. Harrison will continue serving as an Executive Vice President as well, building online station networks. For more, read Digital Music News’ coverage here.

IN BLOG POST, iBIQUITY CEO WARNS RADIO AGAINST A PURELYONLINESTRATEGY: Now presenting his thoughts and arguments for HD Radio in a monthly blog is Bob Struble, President and CEO of iBiquity. In his second monthly post, Struble argues that broadcasters should not think of the future as an “either/or” decision between the Internet and HD: “Preposterous I say. We are capable of and need to do both.” He goes on to dispute claims that mobile and in-car Wi-Fi access will kill AM/FM, writing, “Mobile internet is dramatically more costly than AM/FM as an audio streaming service…Mobile internet will be great for other apps like email and search, and will be a strong addition to the growing list of radio competitors, but it is not the Death Star.” Read his full blog post here.

ENTERCOM PORTLAND STATIONS STREAMED TO iPHONES: FlyTunes, a mobile music streaming service, will now deliver Entercom’s Portland radio stations to iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Currently, KGON-FM, KWJJ-FM and KNRK-FM, KNRK’s HD2 channel are streaming, with KFXX-AM, KRSK-FM and KYCH-FM to be added by the end of this month. For more, read RBR’s coverage here.

NEW iPHONE APP STREAMS MUSIC FROM USER’S, FRIENDS’ PCs: Simplify Media’s iPhone application allows users to stream their PC music collections to the mobile device. Additionally, users can also access friends’ music libraries, as long as their friends are using the service (for which you must first download a desktop version of the application). Industry analyst Mark Ramsey points out that this is an example of “social radio,” in which, “You and I can create our own radio stations from our own content and share them with friends who are mobile.” Read more of his thoughts at his Hear 2.0 blog here.
