Normally, Wi-Fi receivers only connect to one base station at a time, even if there are others in the area. Microsoft’s system allows connection to multiple stations at one time, thereby bypassing station hand-offs which result in signal drops. Tests on the Washington University campus “found the system eliminated nearly all the problems of network hopping. This allowed for seamless connections.” This is particularly important for Internet radio streams, in which constant signal interruptions would make listening to webcasts an annoying experience.
