RAIN 8/28: RIAA lobbying for radio royalties at political conventions

RIAA, ARTISTS LOBBY FOR COPYRIGHT CZAR AND ROYALTIES AT CONVENTIONS: The RIAA will be lobbying at both the Democratic National Convention — currently ongoing in Denver — and at the Republican Convention in Minnesota next week, “pushing proposed legislation that would create a cabinet-level copyright czar,” reports Wired’s Listening Post. RIAA president Cary Sherman and others from the recording industry are in Denver “to be relevant to the political process,” said RIAA spokeswoman Cara Duckworth. Additionally, recording artist Art Alexakis (pictured) of the band Everclear was lobbying in Denver on behalf of musicFIRST, pushing a performance royalty fee for broadcast radio. MICROSOFT DEVELOPSSEAMLESS” IN-CAR WI-FI: Microsoft, in cooperation with the University of Massachusetts and the University of Washington, have developed an in-car Wi-Fi technology that will prevent signal drop-offs when “handing-off” service from one base station to the next. Normally, Wi-Fi receivers only connect to one base station at a time, even if there are others in the area. Microsoft’s system allows connection to multiple stations at one time, thereby bypassing station hand-offs which result in signal drops. Tests on the Washington University campus “found the system eliminated nearly all the problems of network hopping. This allowed for seamless connections.” This is particularly important for Internet radio streams, in which constant signal interruptions would make listening to webcasts an annoying experience. With larger-scale tests being planned, “the infrastructure for car Wi-Fi is starting to fall into place.” For more, read DailyTech’s coverage here.

SEATTLE TALK RADIO CONTINUES DISCUSSION ONLINE IN WIKI: Seattle talk radio station KVI AM 570 and sports radio KJR AM 950 and have partnered with social networking site WikiTalk.com so that listeners can continue and respond to on-air discussions. “With WikiTalk you can take talk radio and instantly push it online and create a great dynamic for listeners, particularly when you get discussions fueled by hot topics and producers fanning the flames by simultaneously posting updated news, videos, and pictures,” said KJR AM Sports Radio producer Josh Sabrowsky. INDUSTRY INSIDER: REPLACE INTERNET STREAM’S AD GAPS WITH NEW CONTENT: Industry insider Tom Zarecki has had it with the PSAs and repetitive promos that plague ad breaks in terrestrial radio streams. Instead, he suggests inserting unique content, such as local event calenders or sight-seeing tips. Stations could feature original comedy content, either from listeners eager to participate, or from syndicated prep services like Comic Wonder. Enterprising stations might feature content like biographies of artists the station plays, bits of interviews, or local acts. For more of his thoughts, read Zarecki’s column in RBR here.
