CLEAR CHANNEL LAUNCHES THEIR OWN iPHONE APP

Clear Channel has launched iPhone application iHeartRadio, an extension of Clear Channel’s music site iHeartMusic. This comes a matter of days after the launch of Weather Underground’s WunderRadio (RAIN coverage here). iHeartRadio currently only streams 10 terrestrial stations, as well as Internet streams erockster and Pride Radio.

As Media Week reports (here), an internal memo from CC Online Music and Radio president Evan Harrison revealed that new stations will be added each week and a new version will arrive within the year. The application is free and features album art, lyrics and streaming ads measured by Ando.

As we reported yesterday in RAIN, industry expert Mark Ramsey asked, “Do I want to download the app from AOL Radio that has only the CBS stations…or the app that has EVERY radio station?” Perhaps the WunderRadio service obviates the need for iHeartRadio too, and Clear Channel’s had the misfortune of bad timing in releasing this application.

CBS RETAINS TOP SPOT IN AUGUST COMSCORE RATINGS

CBS Radio, together with AOL Radio, grabbed the top spot in Arbitron’s comScore Online Radio Rankings for August — their third month at No. 1. CBS Radio has held the top spot ever since June when it partnered with AOL Radio. In August, CBS Radio had an AQH of 225,000 (Mon-Sun, 6AM-Midnight), a 9% increase from June. Coming in at second was LAUNCHcast Radio with 134,400 AQH and then Clear Channel at 95,900.

CBS ONLINE STATION MOVES TO HD

CBS Radio’s K-ROCK2 online stream, an off-shoot of WXRK New York, launched on-air as an HD-2 channel for WXRK. The channel features primarily alternative rock music. For more, read FMQB’s coverage here.
