RAIN 11/13: AM/FM ONLINE GETS 1.3 PPM SHARE IN NY ·Nov 13, 11:04 AM TERRESTRIAL STREAMS GET A 1.3 SHARE IN NY PPMIn fact, across the 10 PPM markets Arbitron analyzed, encoded AM/FM streams account for a 1.0 quarter-hour share. New York ranked first, followed by San Francisco and Atlanta (1.2), then Los Angeles (1.1).
And the most listened-to formats? Arbitron says Adult Contemporary music and News/Talk broadcasters get the biggest audiences online. As Tom Taylor points out, “the pattern of listening online – mostly daytime in-office listening – suggests that music and news-and-information are probably just what a lot of workplace listeners crave… Online listening is a workplace phenomenon whose dragnet mostly catches 25-54s.” Read more in Taylor on Radio-Info here. MOSSBERG: AUTONET MOBILE WI-FI HAD ADVANTAGES OVER CELLULAR DATA CONNECTIONSThe Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg seemed mostly pleased after testing the Autonet Mobile in-car Wi-Fi solution (see earlier RAIN coverage here (bottom story) and here).
In the “All Things Digital” blog (and in the WSJ), Mossberg says the Autonet has three important advantages over mobile Internet via a smartphone or other handheld: it’s not tied to a single device, the monthly cost is lower, and the Autonet’s connection is steadier while in a moving car. And while throughput isn’t as fast as at home (Mossberg reported his averaged 400-450kbps), that should be enough for Internet radio. The downside: the router is $500 ($400 in a holiday promotion) plus installation and activation. Read Mossberg (and see some video!) in “All Things Digital” here. ENTERCOM ADDING SPLASHCAST TECH TO MUSIC SITES Entercom has partnered with tech company SplachCast to supply “micro-channels” in the form of “virtual, embeddable, interactive TVs” for 70 of its music radio sites, according to MediaPost. Entercom says the initiative is driven by the idea to provide more local content online. MediaPost’s reporting is here.
