RAIN 12/16: New Dodge pickup sports mobile WiFi (and thus, mobile Net radio!) ·Dec 16, 11:09 AM NOT JUST AN OL’ PICKUP: DODGE RAM A ROLLING WIFI SPOTYou might not think the most technologically-advanced (or web-connected) vehicle on the road would be a pickup truck, but how about that new Dodge Laramie Ram? It sports a 3G wireless EVDO connection to Chrysler’s UConnect mobile Internet service (see more in RAIN here) and a router that turns the truck into a 100-foot radius Internet hotspot, even while chugging down the road. That means a broadband connection (well, 400-800Kbps) to computers and any other WiFi devices in the car. And that means, of course, mobile Internet radio. UConnect is also Bluetooth-equipped, which allows phone calls via the navigation system. A UConnect susbscription is $29/month.
Other tech treats include an in-dash 30GB hard drive connected to the vehicle’s music system (to which you can directly rip music by way of its USB interface — or straight from the Ram’s CD player!), plus Sirius “Backseat TV” and satellite radio. For all these advances, the truck is gas-powered and gets just 20 miles to the gallon. Read Fast Company’s article here.
PANDORA NOW AVAILABLE FOR WINDOWS MOBILE PHONESPandora’s Internet radio service is now available for Windows Mobile devices. Currently, the HTC’s Touch (for Sprint) and XV6900 (for Verizon), and the Motorola Q9c (on both Sprint and Verizon), are supported. Windows Mobile users can download the application from Pandora.com. Radioshift accesses radio streams online and automatically chooses the best available audio stream based on your current connection (Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G) using a feature called Smart Stream. You can pick up the application from Apple’s App Store for $9.99. Read more in a MacWorld story at PC World here.
Rogue Amoeba, by the way, also makes a product called Nicecast (here), which allows one to stream an iTunes library “to the world, or just across your house.” CRTC HEARS COMMENTS FROM BROADCASTERS, TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANIESThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is reviewing comments from broadcasters and telecommunications companies in anticipation of new media hearings in February.“At the heart of the submissions are two competing visions of the Internet and new media in Canada,” writes The Toronto Star (here). “One side – supported by telecom companies, broadcasters, and several industry groups – maintains the CRTC’s 1999 decision to take a hands-off approach to the Internet has largely worked…‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” “The counter-argument comes from creator groups such as the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, or ACTRA, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, or SOCAN, the Canadian Film and Television Production Association and the Writers Guild of Canada, who believe the 1999 decision was a mistake and the CRTC should take this opportunity to reverse it.” These groups support regulatory and licensing requirements, and many even want “a new tax on Internet service providers to be used to fund the creation of Canadian new media.” share: del.icio.us.
