RAIN 01/07: New Pandora iPhone app even more iTunes-like ·Jan 7, 10:47 AM PANDORA 2.0 LAUNCHES FOR iPHONEPandora’s iPhone application has received a major update today with a range of new features. Dubbed Pandora 2.0, the updated application now displays artist biographies, streaming samples of bookmarked songs, and a cover flow-like display of recently played tracks (pictured). Additionally, listeners can now create a new station using a single song—similar to Apple’s Genius playlist generator. Other updates include the ability to share stations through email, and a song progress bar has been added. Updates like the cover-flow display and Genius-like channel creation mimic Apple features, perhaps showing that Pandora — at least on the iPhone — is further embracing Apple design. The update is free, as is the Pandora iPhone application. For more, read Tech Crunch’s coverage here. BONNEVILLE SHUTS DOWN iCHANNEL MUSICBonneville has shut down its iChannel music network. iChannel was an Indie music network broadcast through HD and streamed online, which let independent bands submit music for consideration. The channel broadcast on 101.9 HD2 Chicago, 103.5 HD2 Washington D.C., 102.7 HD2 Salt Lake City, 101.1 HD2 St. Louis, and 92.3 HD2 Phoenix. While the stream is dead, iChannel’s website is still up (here). RBR observes (here): “If it isn’t making money, the plug will get pulled. That’s what most likely happened here…CC Radio’s eRockster HD2 format is still around at a good handful of stations and still outstanding. If that gets shuttered, a good bunch of us just might be done with HD Radio listening altogether.” OBAMA APPOINTS LAWYER WHO REP’D RIAA IN CRB HEARINGSPresident-elect Barack Obama today selected attorney Tom Perrelli (pictured right) as associate attorney general—third in command within the Justice Department. Perrelli worked for law firm Jenner & Block and has a history of representing the RIAA. According to his official biography, “He has represented the recording industry in a host of cases arising under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), as well as in copyright infringement and digital piracy litigation. He has also represented the record industry and recording artists in a series of copyright royalty proceedings before the Copyright Royalty Board.” TechDirt observes (here), “Given the questionable legal tactics the RIAA has pursued in its litigation and the problems with the Copyright Royalty Board, there is reason to pause regarding his appointment.” For more, read CNET’s coverage here.
