HIGHLY-SPECIFIC AD TARGETING, ANDROID SUPPORT

FlyCast, an application for the iPhone and Blackberry mobile phones that streams over 1,000 Internet radio stations (including our own AccuRadio), has announced a new highly-specific advertisement platform among other updates.

The FlyCast Ad Platform targets listeners based on age, gender, location, listening interests and device type. Both display and audio ads are supported and will be delivered in partnership with DoubleClick’s DART ad serving and reporting platform. For more on the new ad platform, read the official press release here (PDF).

Additionally, FlyCast announced support for Google Android-based devices, including T-Mobile’s G1 mobile phone. The player is also now available on PCs and Macs as a desktop application (pictured left). Other updates include a program guide, interaction with Facebook and AccuWeather, and support for AAC+ and Windows Media streams. For more on these updates, read FlyCast’s press release here (PDF).

UPCOMING CONFERENCE RUN-DOWN

A number of radio and music conferences are soon approaching. Radio Ink’s Convergence ’09 will take place on February 9 through 10 in San Jose, CA. The conference will focus on moving radio forward in “today’s multiplatform media world,” and will feature an opening address from Guy Kawasaki, former Apple exec and Silicon Valley “icon” (RAIN coverage here). More information on Radio Ink’s Convergence ’09 can be found here.

Additionally, the Future of Music Coalition’s Policy Day in Washington D.C. is February 11. The event will focus on emerging issues in government regarding music and will feature FCC Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein. Read more here.

More immediately, music community MIDEM will host a music sector trade show on January 18 through 21 in Cannes, France (more information here). On January 27, UK digital media industry community New Media Knowledge (NMK) will hold a panel titled, “What Happens to Radio?” in London (more info here). You can always see what conferences are upcoming on RAIN in the sidebar to the right.

PALM’S NEW PRE PHONE TO INCLUDE PANDORA, BACKGROUND PLAYBACK

Palm’s recently announced smart phone Pre (rhymes with “tree”) will support Pandora’s mobile application, and will allow background play. This means users can listen to Pandora streams while surfing the web or checking email—a feature not available on iPhones. Additionally, Pandora chief technology officer Tom Conrad called the Pre’s new operating system, “really solid.” For more, read USA Today’s coverage here.

AT&T ENTERS IN-CAR SATELLITE RADIO MARKET

AT&T has entered the satellite radio game, in the car at least, with its recently debuted RaySat Broadcasting satellite antenna. The antenna, which boasts buffering circuitry for better reception, will receive 20 music channels as well as 22 video channels for backseat passengers. The subscription plan, called CruiseCast, costs $28.95 a month and will launch in spring. The equipment costs $1,300. For more, read PC Mag’s coverage here.
