RAIN 02/03: It's "full speed ahead" for Pandora with audio ads

WESTERGREN DEMONSTRATES MEDIUM’S POTENTIAL TO CINCY MEDIA:

Illustrating the disruptive power and potential reach of his company (and Internet radio in general), Pandora founder Tim Westergren pointed out to a gathering of the Cincinnati media community that more people in major markets are listening to Pandora than many large radio stations. (Pandora reports it has 22 million listeners, including 30,000 in the Cincinnati area… and 45,000 more sign up nationwide each day.) Westergren spoke at the Social Media Breakfast, a monthly meeting of Cincinnati technology, marketing and media industries.

The Cincinnati Enquirer quotes him, “Our goal right now is nothing less than to completely replace radio with this whole new thing called personalized radio.” Though Pandora’s audience seemed a little reticent to accept audio advertising when the service introduced (and subsequently halted) it in 2007, Pandora is once again including audio ads in its streams (except in those for paying subscribers). (See RAIN coverage here).

“Every time you go back to the Web site… that is an opportunity to put an ad,” the paper quotes Westergren. “We know you’re looking, because the only time we place an ad is when you click… If we want to, we can deliver an ad only to 32-year-old women in Cincinnati women listening to Bruce Springsteen at 8 p.m. on a Thursday night,” he said. There’s more from The Enquirer here.

DIY-ers CAN BUILD THEIR OWN INTERNET RADIO

Not their own Internet radio station, in this case, but an actual Internet radio tuner device. Tinkerers can now get the Microchip Internet Radio Board from British company Farnell Electronics, for about USD $103. It includes the MPEG Audio codec, an OLED display. audio controls and can tune in to MP3 streams from Shoutcast. Digitpedia reports here.

CANADIAN B’DCASTER BUILDS iPHONE APP

Canadian broadcaster Corus has introduced an iPhone app for its 52 stations’ streams. Corus developed the app with streaming technology and services company StreamTheWorld. One feature is “shake the shuffle” — the user shakes the device to get a random Corus station. [Aside from the novelty of the motion detection, it’s hard to imagine a typical music or radio listener ever using this. – Ed.]
