RAIN 3/17: More 18-34s listened to the Fresh 102.7/NY stream than its broadcast ·Mar 17, 12:16 PM NY AC’s STREAM BEATS ITS BROADCAST SIGNAL FOR ADULTS 18-34, WOMEN 18-34For perhaps the first time anywhere — and almost certainly the first time for a major market commercial radio station — more in-market, key-demo listeners listened to a radio station via its online stream than to its over-the-air broadcast.
According to Arbitron PPM results, in the third week of February, CBS-owned WWFS-FM’s (“Fresh 102.7”) online stream beat its broadcast in both adults 18-34 (3.2 vs. 3.0) and women 18-34 (in which it was also ahead of format competitor WLTW). Tom Taylor, in “Taylor on Radio-Info,” notes, “Putting together the 3.0 and the 3.2 would make WWFS something like #4 with 18-34 men and women.” Keep in mind we’re talking about “in-market” listening here… almost certainly nationally (or globally) popular stations like KCRW/Santa Monica or Absolute Radio (formerly Virgin Radio) in London have seen online audiences far larger than local over-the-air listenership. CLEAR CHANNEL, GOOGLE EXECS LAUNCH GOOM RADIO “TO CREATE REMARKABLE RADIO EXPERIENCES” ONLINEFormer Clear Channel New York market manager Rob Williams and former director of dMarc Broadcasting under Google Drew Hilles have announced the launch of Goom Radio in the U.S., an online radio service they promise will “reinvent radio for the Internet generation.”
According to the company, the service will launch in the U.S. later this year (Goom Radio launched a service in France last year under the direction of different executives). The Goom Radio site, where visitors can now sign up for “beta” invitations, promises “the best music, the best shows, and the best interviews with the top names in the entertainment industry. All hand-picked by the most talented DJs and artists, delivered to you.” Goom Radio also promises customization and high-quality “proprietary HD sound.” The executive team apparently sees a strategic opening for an expertly-programmed online service online. “We have put together a stellar team, all with a strong background in radio and an eye toward the future of programming for the Internet generation,” said Williams in the press announcement, “to establish Goom Radio as a unique alternative to what is currently available in the world of online music. Our objective is to create remarkable radio experiences, something we feel the current generation of online offerings has not really focused on, truly bringing together the best of both the radio and the Internet.” Williams and Hilles will serve as CEO and Chief Sales Officer, respectively. Tim Herbster, former Z100/New York music director, will head programming. Read the press release here. Visit Goom Radio here. MARKETERS SEE BIG THINGS FOR RADIO AND THE MOBILE WEBComScore says 22.4 million mobile users now access the mobile web on a daily basis — double the number of a year ago. ComScore credits better handsets, better networks, and better user interfaces with the growth. And there’s certainly more content.Needless to say, this presents a ripe opportunity for marketers and radio. A panel of mobile marketing pros at the RAB Conference predicts mobile ad budgets to grow by 40% this year. eMarketer estimates the mobile platform to attract $6.5 billion in ad revenues by 2012. R&R writes, “Citing Nielsen data, Katz360 president Brian Benedik said there are 145 million mobile media consumers in the United States today.” Read more from ClickZ here and R&R’s coverage here. share: del.icio.us.
