SMYTH TO BROADCASTERS: GET STREAMING, RIGHT NOW

Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth writes in his “From the Corner Office” blog that it’s no longer a question for broadcasters whether or not to stream online. “It is vital for radio to follow our audience, to make ourselves available on new platforms and in new forms as the digital environment changes,” he writes. “If we don’t, we jeopardize our future as an industry. If we are not moving forward, we are losing ground.”

Smyth acknowledges the costs of streaming online are high. SoundExchange royalty fees, not to mention bandwidth, and competition with established Internet-only webcasters makes streaming difficult. “That’s today; but what about tomorrow, next year, or 2020? We are actively searching for the proper business model for streaming audio and we cannot abdicate that search to the Internet-only pure play operators. The extension of our established, local brand names onto digital devices is just another chapter in radio’s evolution to a multi-platform local media company.” Smyth’s entire blog post can be found here.

DOZEN ONLINE STREAMSMAKE THE BOOKS” IN FEB PPM DATA

Twelve AM/FM online streams made the books in Arbitron’s February PPM data. To “make the books,” a stream must generate a minimum weekly Cume rating of 0.495. Nine markets were represented, including New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles. Though most of the twelve had an AQH share of 0.1, KSFO in San Jose and WPLJ of Middlesex grabbed a 0.9 share. Tom Taylor notes in his daily newsletter, that the popularity of AC online streams “[reminds] us that this is mostly in-office listening we’re talking about.”

“The single most curious thing” in Arbitron’s numbers, according to Taylor, is that Chicago station WBBM-FM scored a 0.5 Cume share and 0.1 AQHin Detroit. For more, check out Radio Ink’s coverage here or the release from Arbitron here (PDF, webcast data on page 40).

PLENTY OF UPDATES FROM PANDORA AND SLACKER

A steady stream of updates have been coming in lately from Pandora and Slacker. Both have incorporated lyrics into their streams. Slacker’s lyrics will also appear on the service’s Blackberry application, as well as on their iPhone and Android apps soon (more here). The Blackberry lyrics support for Slacker comes as part of a general update for the app, which includes support for Bluetooth headsets.

Meanwhile, Pandora listeners can be access a song’s lyrics in-stream, as well as by searching for the track here. For more, check out Pandora’s blog update here. Pandora has also added support for the Blackberry 8900.
