RAIN 4/3: MySpace Radio launches for Canadian users with Corus streams

STATION STREAMS CAN BE ADDED TO MYSPACE PROFILES

Corus Entertainment, together with StreamTheWorld and MySpace, yesterday launched MySpace Radio for Canadian users. Corus streams simulcasts of its 52 stations, including advertisements, through the site. For now it would appear only Corus’ streams are including on MySpace Radio. No meta-data is provided for the streams besides a “Now Playing” line. Users can tune in, both on the MySpace Radio site (here), or can add specific station streams directly to their profiles as widget boxes (pictured). The implication here is that users visiting their friends’ pages, who have added the widget, can tune in to Corus’ radio streams without visiting a dedicated Corus site.

There are new targeting options open to advertisers as well. MySpace Canada GM Dave Stevens explains that MySpace advertisers can sponsor specific portions of Corus’ sites, branding an individual station’s player for instance. “It’s really a unique way to be integrated into the music experience, not just with display advertising,” he said. DEL COLLIANO: JUST STREAMING YOUR BROADCAST ONLINE IS NOT INTERNET RADIO

The discussion of radio’s digital future at the Kagan event in New York City recently (RAIN coverage here) sparked industry analyst Jerry Del Colliano to offer his 11 principles for broadcasters to keep in mind when getting online. The recurrent theme: simply streaming your broadcast content online is not “Internet radio.”

“Terrestrial radio on the Internet is simply radio delivered on a computer or mobile device and will be rejected by the 80 million Gen Yers who are necessary to provide the growth for Internet radio,” he writes. “Companies using on-air radio talent to do Internet streams will be sadly disappointed with the results and they’ll be disappointed because advertisers will be disappointed.” Advertisements, on-air talent and content itself needs to be retooled to meet the different advantages and disadvantages of the Internet medium, he argues. PANDORA ON PALM’S NEW PRE PHONE SHOWCASED IN NEW VIDEO; BLACKBERRY APP STORE OPENS

Palm’s upcoming smartphone the Pre (rhymes with “tree”) was on-display in a new promo video showcasing the operating system and features of the phone. One such feature is Pandora’s Internet radio application for the phone, which is shown off towards the end of the video. Watch the video at MacRumors here. The Pre’s Mojo SDK was released recently for developers to start building applications for the phone. Let’s hope we see a good selection of Net radio apps available for the Pre upon its release. Read more on the SDK at Ars Technica here.

In other mobile news, Blackberry recently launched their own application store called Blackberry App World. Featured among the many applications Blackberry users can download are Pandora, iHeartRadio, Slacker and other Internet radio streamers. Found out more about the Blackberry app store here.
