WIMAX REPORTEDLY COMING TO SILICON VALLEY

WiMax provider ClearWire says the service will be commercially available in Silicon Valley some time next year. WiMax tech provides wireless Net connections over a 30-mile radius, with network speeds similar to wired broadband connections. This means a WiMax tower can blanket an entire metro area with wireless Internet, including in-vehicle use. “Besides adding the service in Silicon Valley, Clearwire expects to have WiMax operating in a number of other U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle by the end of next year,” writes the San Jose Mercury News, here.

PANDORA IS OFFICIALLY THIRD-MOST POPULAR FREE IPHONE APP

In the listing of the Top 20 all-time most popular free iPhone applications, Pandora came up third. It also appears to be the only Internet radio app on the list. MEDIAPOST OFFERS TIPS ON INCREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MOBILE VOICE ADS

A new MediaPost blog offers some recommendations for in-call mobile voice ads which sound like great ideas for Internet radio in-stream ads (especially since a larger and larger percentage of them are being delivered to mobile devices). Some ideas: Consider the gender of the voice-over announcer, and make sure it’s appropriate to the campaign. Another good idea is to deliver promo codes, coupons, directions, or links to free stuff like ringtones to increase the effectiveness of a campaign. Also, “align the call-to-action with how the (listener’s) brain would think about it.” Get the details on these suggestions in MediaPost here.

ANDO MEDIA, NOW NET RADIO’S SOLE AUDIENCE METRICS COMPANY, PROFILED IN LOCAL PAPER

Forty-six of the top 50 radio broadcast groups including Clear Channel, Entercom, ESPN, CBS and Braintree-based Greater Media use Ando Media software. The Patriot Ledger of Quincy, Massachusetts on Friday published a brief profile of the local Internet radio firm. The report reveals Ando licenses software to 6,000 radio stations and Internet broadcasters — this includes Ando’s Webcast Metrics audience measurement program and its Targeted Ad Injector, which can deliver ads customized to listeners’ locations. Company founder and chief technology officer Jordan Mendell and Executive Vice President Paul Krasinski spoke to the paper for the article. Read it here.
