RAIN 4/28: Broadcasters, small webcasters face April 30th royalty deadline ·Apr 28, 11:48 AM LOTS OF WEBCASTERS, B’DCASTERS STILL UNCLEAR ON RECORDKEEPING, SAYS OXENFORDThis Thursday, April 30th, is an important royalties deadline for two classes of webcasters, as attorney and webcasting royalties expert David Oxenford reminds readers in his blog.
Thursday April 30 is the deadline for broadcasters who plan to stream under the terms of the NAB/SoundExchange deal to pay any back royalties they owe for streaming from 2006 through the date of the agreement. In his blog, Oxenford reports that lots of operators who are agreeing to these deals aren’t aware of the “full census” reporting requirements. He writes, “Both the small webcasters’ agreement and the NAB-SoundExchange settlement (make it necessary for operators to report)… information for every song — including the name of the song that was played, the featured artist who performed the song, the album on which the song appeared, and the label on which the album was released. In addition, the webcaster must report on the number of times each song was played, and how many people heard each transmission of the song. For more details on the terms of the deals and of full census reporting, read Oxenford’s Broadcast Law Blog post here.
