RAIN 4/30: Reviewers love Net radio on Nokia devices... when it's available

Posted on: 04/30/2009

IF YOU WANT RADIO, XPRESS MUSIC IS NOT THE NOKIA PHONE TO GET

That would be the Nokia N85 (at right), according to a PC World review today. Columnist Ginny Mies calls the N85’s music player “impressive… I could easily see myself using the N85 as my primary music device.” The phone includes an FM transmitter, which allows you to listen to streaming radio on your car stereo (the phone streams the content, then transmits it to an unused frequency on your FM dial).

The N85, like several Nokia phones, comes with the Nokia Internet Radio app. Several phones, that is, but not the 5800 XpressMusic (left), complains AllAboutSymbian.com blogger Steve Litchfield.

In a recent column called “Ten Things that Nokia Did WRONG in making the 5800 XpressMusic,” his top gripe: No Internet radio. “The 5800 has been out for three months now and still there’s no Internet Radio – this has been one of the stars of Nokia’s S60 application bundle over the last 2 years and it’s a pleasure to use. Just not on the 5800 because there’s no client. Not even in beta. Unbelievable.”

WORLD’S FIRSTPOCKET-SIZED WI-FI RADIO COMING END OF MAY

Epoq Multimedia will launch what it calls the “world’s first” pocket-sized Wi-Fi radio, officially titled the EIR-PW01, at the end of May. The device can access over 12,000 Net radio stations and FM stations. It features a scroll wheel, a rechargeable battery and a built-in mono speaker. No word on pricing yet. FONESHOW AND ANDO MEDIA PARTNER FOR AD DELIVERY

Mobile radio service FoneShow and Ando Media have announced an ad-serving partnership. Under the arrangement, providers that distribute Foneshow content can create and stream targeted brand and sponsor messages using Ando Media’s ad injector technology, according to the press release. Foneshow distributes short-form audio, primarily news and talk radio programming, via a telephone-based distribution platform.

WITH SARAH PALIN RADIO, THE DREAM NEEDN’T END

Supporters of Alaska governor and former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin have created Sarah Palin Radio. Described as “Governor Palin’s own ‘friendly’ media,” Sarah Palin Radio offers a occasional live political discussions and an archive of past shows. It doesn’t seem the governor herself has ever appeared on the program, however. Sarah Palin Radio is hosted by the WSRadio.com network.
