NEW UNIT ALL ABOUT MOBILE, INTEGRATING SALES OPPORTUNITIES, GOODMAN TELLS BILLBOARD

“At CBS Radio, about 7% of our audience is now streamed through an iPhone,” David Goodman, the president of CBS’ newly-created Interactive Music Group, tells Billboard. “We’ve had more than 4 million people downloading the app, and we just released the Yahoo app. We’ll be launching more apps for virtually every device over the next couple of months. The more ways that people have to engage in our media, it’s all good.”

Billboard followed up on Tuesday’s news of the creation of the CBS Interactive Music Group (see RAIN coverage here ), which will bring on-demand streamer and music recommendation service Last.fm under the same umbrella as CBS Radio streams and websites and the AOL Radio and Yahoo! Internet radio services. Goodman likes that the new group creates “a one-stop for any advertiser and service advertising across all our platforms.” The inclusion of Last.fm as well means more local ads on the site, said Goodman, as well as more integration with other CBS properties.

Goodman didn’t seem to want to take on the royalty issue head on; and interestingly, there was no mention of CBS Radio’s own interactive Play.It service, unveiled as a beta last year here. Read Billboard’s interview with Goodman here.

UK MOBILE LISTENING, NET RADIO UP IN FIRST QUARTER

A new RAJAR data release reveals that “radio listening via mobile phone continues to grow steadily among adults aged 15+ with Q1, 2009 posting an increase of 13% from 11.6% in Q1, 2008 to 13% in Q1, 2009.”

UK radio listeners are tuning in via the Internet more as well. Q1 2009 Internet radio listening is up 7% over the same period last year. You can go over the figures here.

ANALYST PREDICTS GOOGLE PHONES WILL OUTSELL IPHONES BY 2012

A report from analysts Informa Telecoms & Media predicts that Google Android-based smartphones will outsell Apple’s iPhone by 2012. The first Android phone, the HTC/T-Mobile G1, came out in September of last year. The next model, the Magic, is scheduled to hit shelves next month.

The group says consumers bought nearly 162 million smartphones last year (passing laptops in sales for the first time!). This year, Informa says, 13.5% of new mobile devices sold will be smartphones. That penetration will nearly triple to 38% by 2012. There’s more from Silicon.com in ZDNet here.

SANFRAN MUSICTECH SUMMIT ANNOUNCES FIRST ROUND OF PANELS

Brian Zisk, who’s organizing the May 18th SanFran MusicTech Summit, has released details on three of the dozen or so scheduled panels. Of particular interest to RAIN readers might be “Monetization: Idealism in Practice,” which will feature (former Yahoo! Music head) Ian Rogers of Topspin, Celia Hirschman of KCRW/One Little Indian, David Ring of Universal Music Group, Jim Griffin of Choruss, Tony Van Veen of DiscMakers, and Fred Von Lohmann of The Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Also tentatively slated are panels on the “Future of the Music Industry” and “Recording Studios of the Future.” Other MusicTech Summit highlights will include a “SoundExchange/Webcaster confab,” tech sessions, panels on mobile, recommendation systems, social networks and more. WITH INTERNET RADIO AROUND, LACK OF INDIES ON BROADCAST MAKES SENSE SAYS TECHDIRT

Recent studies have indicated that broadcast radio is still overwhelmingly playing only major label artists (RAIN coverage here). TechDirt sees this as only natural: “It only makes sense that those stations would gravitate towards music and formats that bring in the largest, most mainstream audience. That’s just basic economics.” Besides, they observe, indie music fans probably departed from broadcast radio long ago for Internet radio or mp3 players. While it may make sense, it means broadcast radio is “hardly the cultural juggernaut it was not so long ago.” Read the full TechDirt article here.
