PANDORA: 1 MILLION AFFILIATE SONG SALES A MONTH, 20% FROM iPHONE

Listeners are purchasing about one million songs a month from iTunes and Amazon through Pandora, CTO Tom Conrad told TechCrunch. Additionally, 20% of those sales are coming from Pandora’s iPhone app, which links up with Apple’s iTunes music catalog for on-the-go music purchases. Conrad also said users who buy one track are likely to buy 3-5 more songs as well.

TechCrunch hypothetically extrapolates Pandora’s affiliate sales across the radio industry and finds (if one assumes Pandora represents less than 1% of all U.S. radio listening), that “the potential sales of these affiliate tracks would then be $1.2 billion.” Add in the fact that users buy 3-5 additional tracks and you’re up to $3.6 to $6 billion a year, according to TechCrunch. “Why play such a hypothetical? Well because the total recorded music industry revenue last year was only $4.6 billion. Affiliate links can be big business on the web and on mobile.” For more, find the the TechCrunch article here.

ABC LAUNCHESMUSIC LOUNGESTREAMING RADIO

ABC’s newly launched Music Lounge hosts a radio stream of music tracks featured on ABC television shows. Listeners can also use the site to find music they’ve heard on shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” or “Desperate Housewives,” or to see what music will be featured in upcoming episodes. All the music featured can be purchased through links to Amazon. For more on the Music Lounge, read the Associated Press’ coverage here. Find the site itself here.

AOL RADIO’S NAMEROW FEATURED IN YOUNG EXECUTIVE SPOTLIGHT

AOL Radio’s vice president Lisa Namerow was one of AdweekMedia’s featured “Young Ones,” 10 young executives shaking things up in their respective field. The feature discusses Namerow’s background, her work in bringing AOL Radio to the iPhone and her thoughts on how royalties threaten the industry. Find the article here.

SIRIUS XM LOSES SUBSCRIBERS IN Q1

Sirius XM lost 2% of its subscribers in the first quarter, leaving the satellite radio broadcaster with 18.6 million subscribers. CEO Mel Karmazin blamed the drop on falling car sales and said the company was now focusing on profitability, not subscriber numbers. Sirius XM had a Q1 pro forma adjusted income from operations of $108.8 million, a big turn-around from the $70.2 million loss last year. However, RBR observes (here), “It appears Sirius XM has adopted the newspaper business plan – fewer subscribers, but higher prices and cost cutting. We know how well that’s worked out for newspapers.”
