HD TUNER, WI-FI INCLUDED IN NEW MICROSOFT MEDIA PLAYER

Microsoft will be taking on Apple’s iPod Touch with a new touch-screen media player of their own, one that includes a feature not found in the iPod: HD radio. The Zune HD, officially announced yesterday, packs a built-in HD radio and a Wi-Fi connection which industry insiders say should allow for Internet radio streaming as well.

Not surprisingly, broadcasters — who have been pushing to have FM receivers included in mobile devices — applauded Microsoft’s inclusion of the HD radio receiver. “Microsoft is demonstrating its leadership in consumer products by including HD Radio technology in its Zune HD,” said Dan Mason, CBS Radio president/CEO. “This will be a popular feature this fall when the product becomes available.” Previous models of Microsoft’s Zune media players have included FM receivers.

The Zune HD is expected to surf the web on a modified version of Internet Explorer. It also features a high-def video output and a 3.3-inch OLED multi-touch screen. Microsoft expects to start shipping the device in fall. Find more on the Zune HD at SlipperyBrick here.

NEW UK PRS ROYALTY RATES FOR COMPOSERS ONLY, LIKELY WON’T HELP WEBCASTERS

As a clarification to our coverage yesterday, the new royalty rates from UK royalty collection agency PRS For Music cover only royalties paid to song composers. PRS represents songwriters, composers and publishers, so royalties paid to PRS are similar to royalties paid to ASCAP/BMI/SESAC. Because the new royalty rates (covered in RAIN here) cover only composers, they don’t help to make webcasting affordable in the UK. When the new PRS royalty rates are combined with those from PPL (which represents record labels), it brings total per-performance royalty rates close to, if not beyond, those from SoundExchange here in the US.

QROCKRADIO.COM BRINGS TRADITIONAL FEEL TO NEW MEDIUM OF NET RADIO

The Infinite Dial recently listened to QRockRadio.com (here, an online station that recreates ’70s and ’80s-era WKZQ Myrtle Beach, S.C. The review was so glowing (“It’s a project of definite merit…proof that no heritage station’s legacy need languish indefinitely”) we decided to check out QRockRadio.com for ourselves.

We were struck by the inclusion live professional hosts — who are full of personality and sound like they’re genuinely having fun — station jingles, and other elements usually found in over-the-air radio broadcasts. It really sounds like the online simulcast of a terrestrial station, rather than an online-only webcast. — MS

WEB RADIO MAY CONTRIBUTE TO RISE OF INDEPENDENT MUSIC

A2IM has found that independent music is increasing in popularity, thanks in part to the “wealth of new platforms” on which music can now be heard, including Internet radio. The organization found that 40% of all music played at non-traditional web radio is independent, while over half of the music aired on Pandora is independent. Independent labels also accounted for 32% of aggregate album sales in 2008 and picked up 56 awards at this year’s Grammys, according to A2IM. “When traditional gatekeepers and obstacles to reaching fans are removed, indies thrive,” the release states. Find it here.

TRITON DIGITAL MEDIA ENHANCES MOBILE OFFERINGS

Triton Digital Media has enhanced its mobile services for broadcasters with Mobile Xpress Messenger. The new features includes “intelligent keyword functionality,” which will allow listeners to participate in on-air promotions “without having to first sign-up via a station’s Web site.” Find more on Triton’s new mobile offerings at Radio and Records here.

  1. The A2IM study is interesting in that it only looks at how these new platforms have benefited music, but ignores that the new platforms are not benefiting from the music they play. In fact, as RAIN continually points out, all the work new media does to help music is rewarded with excessive royalty rates. A2IM’s study helps prove what the NAB has been saying all along, and that airplay helps music sales. Therefore, performance royalties are unnecessary.
