RAIN 6/23: Stern blames rights issues for iPhone snag ·Jun 23, 11:45 AM CONTRACT ISSUES HOLD UP STERN ON IPHONE Howard Stern says it’s “a rights thing, a contractual rights thing” that’s kept him off SiriusXM’s new iPhone app.
The Sirius XM app is reportedly the most-downloaded free music app, and one of the top free apps of any kind, in the time since it was made available on Thursday. On his show yesterday, Stern didn’t explicitly mention who was behind the hold-out, but reportedly complained, “It was a rights issue and a whole entanglement thing… So, we’re not on it. Maybe one day we will be.” Read ZDNet’s coverage here. CRIDLAND: FORGET THE FM TUNER, NEW iPHONE SOFTWARE GOOD FOR RADIOThough the new iPhone 3GS doesn’t include an FM tuner, radio pro James Cridland writes in his blog that the new iPhone v3.0 software is actually a good thing for the radio industry.
First, the new iPhone software’s ability to connect to streaming MP3 opens up the iPhone to stations for which creating its own dedicated application wasn’t practical (think smaller business webcasters or locally-owned broadcasters) and/or which weren’t included in aggregation apps like WunderRadio. Plus, now, as we reported, the stream continues in the background while you use other apps. Secondly, the iPhone is now like a broadcast-quality remote transmitter! Cridland writes, with “the Voice Memo app… if you record a voice memo, you can email that voice memo – as a high quality AAC file. Which means you can file broadcast-quality audio from wherever you have internet coverage. It’s the cheapest outside-broadcast unit you have.” An artist backstage can “cut a liner” that sounds like she was in your studio. A listener can record a high-quality song request. A client can add a tag to a spot to advertise a special offer, etc. Read more from James Cridland, BBC head of Future Media and Technology for audio and music, in his blog here.
