PARTNERSHIP WITH UK’S ABSOLUTE RADIO SHOWS HOW SPOTIFY CAN BENEFIT RADIO’S ONLINE BRAND

Much-discussed music service Spotify may offer a lot to consumers, but Edison Research’s Tom Webster points out that it could also be an aid to radio online. In discussing the company’s partnership with Absolute Radio to promote the film “(500) Days Of Summer,” Webster writes that Spotify — the on-demand music service/playlist creator, currently only available in Europe — provides online users with their most requested feature: playlists. On the one side, you have users creating their own personalized playlists on Spotify. On the other, you have Absolute Radio’s DJs airing their expertly-crafted playlists. The combination of both services is “truly meaningful to a listener,” because it adds context and curation. “The Absolute/Spotify collaboration does both, by allowing listeners to share stories associated with their playlists AND by having the Absolute DJ’s submit their own hand-crafted lists of the best relationship songs,” writes Webster. MORE THAN JUST AN APP, NEW RADIO PARADISE MOBILE SITE ALLOWSBACKGROUND STREAMING

Radio Paradise, in cooperation with When I’m Mobile, has developed a mobile-friendly version of its site that is optimized to be viewed on small screens and takes advantage of the iPhone’s background streaming capabilities. When a user on a mobile device, such as Blackberry or iPhone, navigates to the Radio Paradise site, they are met with a simplified version of the homepage with options to tune in, view previously played tracks or access the forum. Additionally, the site lets iPhone users open the Radio Paradise stream in the Safari web browser which allows the user to open other applications (though not other websites) while the music continues to play. Most other dedicated radio applications stop the music once the user hits the home button, or tries to open a different app. For more, find the companies’ press release here.

KATZ EXPANDS OPERATIONS TO SELL DISPLAY ADS

Katz 360 Sales has partnered with The Rubicon Project to start selling display ads for station websites. “The one hole we’ve had in the digital arena was display. This gets Katz into the non-audio game,” said Katz 360 Sales president Brian Benedik. For more, check out Inside Radio’s coverage here.

ONKYO’S NEW AV STEREO RECEIVERS INCLUDE PANDORA, RHAPSODY

Onyko’s TX-NR807, the company’s new home AV stereo receiver, includes support for streaming radio and networked music. However, the Internet radio features are limited to Pandora, Rhapsody and Sirius XM. The stereo has seven channels of 135W amp power and includes HDMI ports. It’s available now for $1,099.
