RAIN 8/19: In-ear wireless device delivers live sports coverage without multi-second delay

Posted on: 08/19/2009

RECEIVER PULLS RADIO COVERAGE OVER LOCAL AREA CLOSED CIRCUIT

A new wireless in-ear device is designed to allow fans at sporting events to listen to the play-by-play coverage of the event without satellite or re-transmission delays, and even tune in to the opposing team’s commentators. The device, called Live Sports Radio takes the radio broadcast directly from a fan’s favorite team’s announcers, playing the commentary to fans “in real time because they come over what is essentially a closed circuit, reports The Wall Street Journal. This eliminates delays in transmitting the announcer’s call that now stretch up to 20-some seconds depending on the broadcaster.” Because the device taps in directly to a fans’ favorite team’s commentary at the stadium, it is always capable of receiving that team’s coverage — even if the team is away. The device, used in the recent PGA Tournament and at tennis tournaments, will be promoted to college football fans this season. The company also hopes to expand into broadcasting NFL, MLB, NASCAR and NBA games. They’re available online and at games for around $20. For more, check out the Wall Street Journal‘s coverage here.

CHUMBY SOFTWARE TO BE PORTED TO RANGE OF DEVICES

The software running Chumby — the beanbag touch-screen widget-loving device capable of streaming net radio, checking your email and displaying weather forecasts — will be ported to a wide range of devices before the end of the year. Tabletop radios, TVs, Blu-ray players and clocks from manufacturers like Sony, Samsung, Broadcom and Marvell will be powered by Chumby’s widget-friendly software. The first device to hit shelves with the operating system will be a digital photo frame. RAIN has more coverage on the Chumby here. More on this story can be found at Forbes here.
