RAIN 8/26: KCRW to launch online stream to "encompass whole scope" of the station

STREAM WILL FEATURE MIX OF ARCHIVED, NEW CONTENT

Widely regarded as among the most innovative broadcasters in the online world, KCRW is set to launch a new Internet stream with a wholly unique approach. Eclectic24, the Santa Monica College public broadcaster’s new online channel, will mesh archived material with new music. Interviews, live performances, KCRW music features (Guest DJ Project, Today’s Top Tune, etc.) will be programmed amongst new music in a stream specially designed for KCRW’s online audience.

And therein lies the importance of Eclectic24: KCRW is not simply repackaging its on-air broadcast into an Internet stream. Instead, it’s creating a unique destination for listeners online—a channel that makes KCRW’s site more than a spot where out-of-location listeners can hear the station’s broadcast. KCRW is not only acknowledging its growing online audience, but has created a stream that caters directly to them and invites even more listeners to tune in online. Eclectic24 launches on Labor Day, September 7 and will be accessible here.

RADIO ONE TO STREAM MORE LARGE MARKET STATIONS IN PROPRIETARY PLAYER

Radio One has added online streams for most of its stations, reports Tom Taylor in his Radio-Info newsletter. Stations in Cleveland and other cities are “using the Radio One player it piloted in the Washington, D.C. market,” writes Taylor (RAIN coverage here). Subscribe to Taylor’s newsletter here.

SPOTIFY IS UNIVERSAL’S “LARGEST DIGITAL SOURCE OF INCOME” IN SWEDEN; FACEBOOK EYES THE SERVICE

Just days after Facebook application iLike was sold to MySpace (RAIN coverage here), Facebook appears to be eying much-hyped music service Spotify — which is reportedly now the largest source of digital revenue for Universal Music Group in Sweden. “Spotify is so good,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, while TechCrunch reported that “talks have intensified dramatically in the last week” between Facebook and Spotify. “The match certainly seems logical,” writes Digital Music News (here). “As a stand-alone, the Spotify model could be hopeless, thanks to a lukewarm advertising market and scant interest in premium subscriptions.”

Meanwhile though, Spotify is earning Universal Music Group more revenue than iTunes in Sweden. “In five months from the launch, Spotify became our largest digital source of income and so passed by iTunes,” said UMG Sweden head Per Sundin. “It’s a fantastic development.” Find more on that story at Wired here.

DEES ENTERTAINMENT TO PURSUE HD STREAMING AUDIO WITH NEW PARTNERSHIP

Dees Entertainment has partnered with Orban Products to develop high definition streaming technology that will use 60% less bandwidth, said Dees Entertainment’s CEO. The new technology will be used through the company’s Dees Digital Network (DDN) player. “Our goal is to have our DDN Audio Sound in cars and hand-held devices everywhere,” said Dees Entertainment CEO Rick Dees (pictured). PROJECTION PINS MOBILE WEB AD REVENUE AT $2 BILLION BY 2014

According to a new projection by Juniper Research, mobile web ad revenues will reach $2 billion by 2014 up from $500 million this year, though they will remain “a small sliver of overall advertising dollars for the foreseeable future.” The overall mobile ad market currently earns $1.4 billion, but will grow to $6 billion in 2014 according to the projection.
