RAIN 8/31: Web company turns free product into revenue without ads ·Aug 31, 10:25 AM NYT: THE LONGER EVERNOTE USERS TRY SERVICE, THE MORE WILLING THEY ARE TO PAY FOR MOREWith a free application and no advertisements, web company Evernote is still earning revenue, reports The New York Times. The company allows users to store data, notes, voice memos and more online, which they can then access on any computer or mobile device — all for free. Millions have already tried Evernote, downloading the free iPhone app or desktop service, but only 25% of users stick around for over 4 months. However, the company has found that “the longer customers used the service, the more likely they were to start paying for it.” In other words, the longer someone used Evernote’s service, the more they became interested in the company’s premium options — which come with a monthly or yearly fee.
The result is growing revenues, though the service is still completely free for most users. “[Evernote’s] model of freemium won’t work for every company. But it certainly could work for other companies who can retain customer loyalty and make their service more valuable over time while driving down costs,” writes The New York Times.
