RAIN 9/10: New iPod Nano will have FM radio you can pause ·Sep 10, 12:54 PM JOBS GIVES RADIO THE iPOD TUNER, ADDS “LIVE PAUSE” FEATUREThe new iPod Nano music player here unveiled at yesterday’s Apple event in San Francisco comes (finally) not only with an FM tuner, but it gives users the ability to “pause” live radio — that is, to temporarily stop the audio playback (for up to 15 minutes) and pick up again right where it was stopped — like a TiVo. The function, called “Live Pause,” does not, however, give users the ability to save the temporarily recorded material (though one could scan forwards and backwards within that 15-minute buffer).
Next week Microsoft will unveil the new Zune HD with HD Radio. Mark Ramsey, in his Hear 2.0, remarked, “From Apple’s perspective, this makes sense in that they were able to essentially ‘re-create’ radio in their own image. Read Ramsey in Hear 2.0 here. Rather than simply add FM they enhanced it, which is a very “Apple” thing to do.” And Tom Webster in The Infinite Dial makes the excellent point that the new product (which now also includes a video camera) opens a promo opp: “Now, with one device (that you could easily give away) you can reach your listeners and ask them to capture their own videos of station events, concerts and other local ‘spectacles’ to upload and share on your website…”
