RAIN 9/11: Last.fm's user-generated programming comes to broadcast radio ·Sep 11, 10:16 AM NEW STATION BRINGS ONLINE MUSIC SERVICE TO THE AIRWAVESOnline music service Last.fm will launch an HD multicast station for New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco on October 5, CBS Radio announced today. The station’s content will revolve around Last.fm’s music charts generated by what the service’s 25 million monthly users are listening to. Additionally, in-studio performances and artist interviews will also be featured.
The new station will be heard on WWFS-FM (102.7 HD2) in New York, KCBS-FM (93.1 HD2) in Los Angeles, WXRT-FM (93.1 HD3) in Chicago and KITS-FM (105.3 HD3) in San Fransisco. Listeners can also tune in to Last.fm’s broadcast station online and on CBS Radio’s mobile applications. “Millions of people have helped create one of the best music discovery sites out there, and the information they provide us about their listening preferences will be at the core of everything we do on this new station,” said David Goodman, president of the CBS Interactive Music Group. “We believe this is exactly the type of programming that will help bring new listeners to the HD multicast frontier.” CLEAR CHANNEL UPDATES iHEARTRADIO iPHONE APPClear Channel has updated its iHeartRadio iPhone application, adding some new features and generally improving stability and performance. RADIO EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON RADIO’S DIGITAL FUTURE: “INTERACTIVITY IS A BLESSING”Radio World spoke to three radio experts and participants of the upcoming “Digital Think Tank Super Session” at the NAB Radio Show — Intervox Communications president Peggy Miles, Triton Media Group CEO Mike Agovino and Emmis Interactive founder/co-president Deborah Esayian — about radio’s digital future. “Interactivity is a blessing. Too many broadcasters try and convince the audience to care about what the stations wants them to care about instead of relating to the things the audience already cares about,” said Agovino. On mobile listening, Miles recommended to “make sure your station can be heard on mobile applications. That was hard a couple of years ago, but getting easier every day.” Read Radio World’s full, extensive interviews with the three experts here.
RHAPSODY HITS THE APPLE APP STORE, “UNDERWHELMS FOR NOW,” SAYS WIREDRhapsody’s iPhone app is now available from Apple’s App Store, providing subscribers with access to on-demand streaming tunes on the go. Rhapsody To Go subscribers (who pay $15 a month) should find a lot to like about the new app, but Wired’s Eliot Van Buskirk says it “isn’t ambitious enough to make a big splash,” especially compared to Spotify’s mobile app (RAIN coverage here). Specifically, the lack of offline music caching and playlist collaboration disappointed Van Buskirk. Read his full thoughts at Wired.com here.share: del.icio.us.
