RAIN 9/25: Thanks to everyone who attended RAIN Summit East ·Sep 25, 11:56 AM RAIN SUMMIT EAST A WILD SUCCESS!The first-ever RAIN Summit East yesterday in Philadelphia was a rousing success! We’d like to thank everyone who came out to attend the Summit — it was jam-packed and, as RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson writes at right (here), “even the standing room was overfilled.”
The Summit was filled with hours of fascinating presentations, informative panels and insightful speakers. A big thank you to all our participants: RadioTime’s Dan Halyburton, Pandora’s Les Hollander, Matt Sunshine of the Center for Sales Strategy, Ando Media’s Patrick Reynolds, Triton Media’s Jim Kerr, Listener Driven Radio’s Mike McVay, Jelli’s Mike Dougherty, keynote speaker Jerry Del Colliano, and John Simson, Bryan Calhoun, and Colin Rushing of SoundExchange. A special thank you to Audio4Cast’s Jennifer Lane for organizing the Summit! RAIN would also like to Thank you to everyone who was in Philadelphia for the RAIN Summit East — it was one of the most successful RAIN Summits yet, and it’s all thanks to you! LAST.FM AND 3.5MM HEADPHONE JACK MAKE CLIQ A NET RADIO-READY DEVICEMotorola’s upcoming CLIQ smartphone, packing Google’s Android operating system, will also come pre-loaded with a Last.fm app. Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Yahoo! Mail, MTV, Amazon and (of course) Google also have apps built-in to the CLIQ. All in all, the line-up of pre-loaded apps is “fairly impressive,” says Engadget (here), which also has had plenty of nice things to say about the CLIQ itself.
The device sports a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.1-inch touch-screen, 3G, WiFi, and (most importantly) a standard 3.5mm headphone jack — making it a very music-friendly phone. Pandora, Slacker and Imeem are among other streaming radio options for the Android platform. The CLIQ will be available on October 19 from T-Mobile. Recently, Verizon added Slacker’s streaming radio app to all Blackberry Storm phones by “pushing” the app to each device (RAIN coverage here). RADIOWEAVE WANTS YOU TO BUILD YOUR OWN RADIO STREAM, BUT CONTENT IS LACKINGWeb startup RadioWeave aims to be a do-it-yourself radio station. The concept is novel: let the listener choose their favorite news, music and entertainment podcasts, traffic and weather updates and even favorite feeds on Twitter and mesh it all into their very own radio stream. So, first you’re presented with an NPR news update podcast, followed by an auto read-aloud Twitter update from Stephen Colbert, which leads into an electronica music podcast. RadioWeave lets users skip through their content, rate each program and even offers an app for the iPhone.
However, the catalog of content RadioWeave offers is lacking (and very, very niche), and the inability to bring your own podcasts or Twitter feeds (what if I want to hear updates from my friends, not celebrities?) is frustrating. Additionally, the auto read-aloud feature for Twitter updates, while fun, is done in the creepy Macintosh monotone voice I remember from 10 years ago. That said, RadioWeave is on to something big with this concept. It’s a Pandora that goes beyond the music to just about everything you hear on the radio. Find RadioWeave here. — MS BEASLEY RELEASES iRADIONOW FOR iPHONEBeasley Broadcast Group has released iRadioNow, an iPhone application that streams 36 Beasley stations. Miami’s “Power 96” WPOW and Philadelphia’s “Wired 96.5” WRDW are among the stations that can be heard via the free app. Find out more at Radio Ink here.
