RAIN 9/30: Ando details new online listening metrics at RAIN Summit ·Sep 30, 12:00 PM NEW UNITS WILL BETTER REFLECT RAW DATA, DEPART FROM RADIO METRICS, SAYS ANDOAndo Media’s senior VP Patrick Reynolds spoke at last week’s RAIN Summit East in Philadelphia and introduced Ando’s new audience measurement system, which it will soon use in its first public audience rankings since April (here).
Reynolds explained that the new measurement units are closer to the raw data Ando actually collects; to present its measurements in traditional radio metrics like “Average Quarter Hours” and “Cume”, as it had been doing, requires some manipulation of the data. What’s more, the data Ando will now be presenting is more in line with other “new media” audience metrics. One of the new metrics, called “Average Open Sessions,” will replace the traditional AQH broadcast metric, and is the average number of listening Reynolds revealed strong online radio listening in recent months. Ando’s webcaster panel’s audience grew from 204 million in May to 234 million in August. Important to keep in mind: (1) This growth came in summer, when webcasters traditionally see listening stall or even decrease as workday listeners take vacations; and (2) According to Reynolds, that growth is actually an increase in listening, and not based merely on Ando adding more webcasters to its panel (earlier this year Ando announced it will measure Pandora’s sizable online audience, but is not yet including those numbers in its online radio universe). In her Audio4Cast blog (here), Jennifer Lane makes an SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT: NET RADIO AT THE DENTISTDave Rahn’s Custom Channels, which builds “white label” Internet radio stations for broadcasters and other third-party brands, has launched Smile Radio, a streaming radio service specially designed for dentist offices. Smile Radio has a total of 12 different genre varieties, including “Adult Rock Smile” to “Jazz Smile” to “Country Smile.” Customers connect via a PC and a simple Flash player, or through a specially-branded “Smile Radio Player” — a rebranded Logitech Squeezebox (included in the subscription price). The service costs *$39.95/month. Find out more at Smile Radio’s homepage here.
AOL RADIO RELEASES APP FOR BLACKBERRY BOLDAOL Radio has created a listening application for the Blackberry Bold device (it says apps for other Blackberry devices are coming soon). With the app, listeners can stream all of AOL Radio’s more than 250 stations, and the more than 150 CBS Radio broadcast stations (including HD stations). The app also enables song skipping, bookmarking favorite stations and it can automatically find local CBS Radio stations in the area (via the unit’s GPS). The app is available from the Blackberry App World. There’s more from the AOL Radio Blog here.share: del.icio.us. Reddit Digg Yahoo Wink Windows Google Newsvine

important point about another figure Reynolds revealed. According to Ando, 77% of online radio listeners are regular weekly listeners. “I particularly like that last stat,” says Lane. “An enormous percentage of Twitter users signed up, tweeted a few times, and have yet to return to the medium. Twitter retains only about 40% of its users from one month to the next. The fact that streaming audio is keeping three-quarters of its audience active on a weekly basis is very promising for continued growth.”

About the whole Ando Media thing – What is the point of all this fancy measurement if there are no advertisers?
There is Katz Media and Target Spot. They personally do not care about these numbers because if they did then Ando’s station rankings would include all stations no matter what ad system they are using.
This whole internet radio scene is all smoke and mirrors.
