Palm's new Centro comes with streaming Internet radio out of the box ·Nov 22, 10:09 AM Somehow I missed this when the first Palm Centro was released last month, but the newest, smallest Palm OS device — available for as little as $99! — comes with streaming Internet radio “out of the box” (i.e., ready to play with no upgrade or download required)! Previous Palm OS devices such as the various Treos came with music player software called PocketTunes that would play MP3s, but the consumer needed to upgrade to PocketTunes Deluxe (approx. $16 and all the hassle that goes with downloading third-party software onto a mobile device) to be able to handle the streaming MP3 format (a/k/a Shoutcast streams) and thus be able to listen to Internet radio. (To find stations to listen to, one could choose from PocketTunes’s featured choices, use the directory at www.Shoutcast.com, or find custom-built pages from webcasters like mobile.accuradio.com.) What’s new about the Centro, compared to most other smartphones, is that PocketTunes Deluxe comes preinstalled on every device for no extra charge. That’s one more step toward Internet radio coming to the masses on their mobile devices. BTW, the Centro is also a little bit smaller and about 33% lighter than most Treos. I’ll probably be getting one this weekend.

Kurt,
Your newsletter is great! We’ve just launched (8/30/07) a new community based (live format) internet radio station. As such, I’m wondering what the best and quickest way might be to get listed on some directories. So far, in 3 months we’re averaging more than 5000 unique listeners per month from 48 states and 11 countries. While we feel that our numbers are great, we would really like more! I think that we’ve got a very unique format and are really excited to be doing what we’re doing. We’ve tried to do everything first class and have invested about $250,000 into our new station so far. Any advice that you could share would be more than welcome! Thanks again for all that you do for internet radio!
