RAIN 10/5: SoundEx asks CRB for twice the royalties in 2011

SoundExchange proposed webcasters pay double the royalties in 2011-2015 most now pay under negotiated settlements. The proposed rates start at $0.0021 per performance in 2011 and grow to $0.0029 by 2015… (continue reading here).

RAIN 10/6: CBS launches “Last.fm Discover” in top 4 markets

CBS Interactive launched Last.fm Discover, a streaming and HD radio station “dedicated to and influenced by” the popular music discovery service, which is now owned by CBS. The station’s programming reflects the music listening patterns of users of the Last.fm online service, as reflected in weekly charts… (continue reading here).

RAIN 10/29: Google unveils music search service

Google officially announced the participation of leading webcaster Pandora, subscription streaming music service Rhapsody, and music-based social media service iMeem in its new music search tool (apparently it’s being called “OneBox” by some). According to The New York Times, “Google users who put the name of a song into the search engine will get, as the top result, information about the musician and an opportunity to stream the song… (continue reading here).

RAIN 11/2: Online radio revenues projected to grow 20% next year

Radio’s online revenues are predicted to reach $441 million by the end of 2009, representing a 12% growth from last year, according to new projections from SNL Kagan. In 2010, that growth rate is expected to reach 20% with annual revenue reaching $530 million… (continue reading here).

RAIN 11/6: Pandora debuts in #2 slot in September Webcast Metrics ratings

Pandora took the #2 spot in Ando Media’s Internet Audio Top 20 for September, the first ranking to include Pandora’s listener statistics. Ando Media also released ratings, measured by Webcast Metrics, for May through August. The September Top 20 ranking also includes new measurement metrics (Session Starts, Average Active Sessions and Average Time Spent Listening) as well as a ranking of just domestic listening… (continue reading here).

RAIN 12/21: Smartphone apps best thing to happen to radio in years, says USA Today

This year, applications for iPhones, Blackberrys and other smartphones reinvigorated radio, USA Today writes, and next year looks even more promising… (continue reading here).

RAIN 12/18: Ford in-car Internet will tune in Internet radio via apps, like a smartphone

Ford is developing its in-car Sync technology to incorporate third-party “apps” — much like on an iPhone — including streaming radio. The Sync system, developed by Ford and Microsoft, features Internet connectivity, GPS and music playback… (continue reading here).
