PANDORA #1 IN DOMESTIC-ONLY CHART

CBS Radio kept the top spot in Ando Media’s global Webcast Metrics rankings
for November. However, CBS Radio’s Average Active Sessions decreased from 174,666 in October to 161,731 in November (in the 6:00am to 12:00am, Monday through Sunday ranking, shown below).

977Music.com Corporate, which holds the #2 spot, saw a similar drop, falling from 43,770 Average Active Sessions to 40,523. Pandora, Clear Channel and Citadel are among those webcasters absent from the global “all streams” ranker.

In the domestic rankings (6:00am to 12:00am, Monday through Sunday), Pandora held on the #1 spot achieved in October and experienced an increase in Average Active Sessions (from 172,494 in October to 187,149 in November). CBS Radio took second with Clear Channel following in third. Some popular webcasters including 977Music, 1.fm and Digitally Imported do not appear in the domestic rankings.

This was the first Webcast Metrics ranking to include Clear Channel’s mobile streams (accessed through apps like iHeartRadio). Clear Channel’s Session Starts count increased from 14,509,368 in October to 20,192,926 in November. However, their Average Active Sessions actually decreased from 119,171 to 115,934, perhaps “due to the consumption behavior of mobile listeners,” as Ando Media suggests.

Ando Media also announced that they will be hosting a web conference to discuss November’s rankings on Friday, January 8 at 2pm EST. If you’re interested in joining the conference, contact Ando Media at ranker@andomedia.com.

PURE WI-FI RADIOS COMING TO THE U.S.

Five of Pure’s tabletop Wi-Fi radios, previously only available in the U.K., are coming to U.S. markets. That includes the Sensia (RAIN coverage here, pictured), which includes a touchscreen and a $349 price tag. Also coming soon to the U.S. are the $139 Siesta Flow alarm clock radio, the $249 waterproof Oasis Flow, the $229 Evoke Flow and the $449 Sirocco 550. Engadget has more coverage on all of Pure’s Internet radios here.

LEFSETZ PREDICTS SUCCESS FOR PANDORA, MORE TROUBLES AHEAD FOR AM/FM

Pundit Bob Lefsetz finds Pandora “tedious, requiring way too much effort to hear what I want,” but still says the service is a winner (especially when compared with terrestrial radio, which he says is “dying, and it will never come back”). Why?

“All because of Tim Westergren. Who kept his company in the public eye. Who aligned himself and his company with the public, not the government or the powers-that-be…Learn Tim’s lesson. Keep yourself in the public eye. Don’t condemn your customers, rally them. And know that the best service does not necessarily win.” You can read Lefsetz’s full blog post here.

iBIQUITY CHIEF: AM/FM MUST FIGHT TO STAY DOMINANT IN CARS

“The days of AM/FM’s monopoly hold on auto infotainment are long gone,” writes iBiquity president and CEO Bob Struble (pictured right) in a recent column. Along with AM/FM radio, new cars can now come with Sirius XM, CD, DVD, USB and iPod connectivity, Struble points out, and Internet radio is coming soon as well.

“AM/FM can no longer take for granted that it will be automatically built into cars, or that it will be used by drivers,” he writes (here). “No, radio has to fight for its position in the dash. The green flag has been waved in this race, and after starting in the pole position, radio is no longer leading the pack.”
